So when a person lies down, the blood returns to the liver. The liver, receiving blood, can see; the foot, receiving blood, can walk; the palm can grip; the fingers can take hold.

Fish causes heat within a person; salt gets the better of the blood. Therefore its people are all dark of complexion and loose of grain, and their illnesses are abscesses and sores. Their treatment is suited to the stone needle.

The Emperor asks: when the frame is ruined and the blood spent, and yet no result is achieved — why is that?

A hammering pulse with blockage and lameness is an intermingling of cold and heat. A solitary pulse means the qi is being consumed; depletion with discharge means it is being taken away; solitary blood is rebellion; depletion is compliance.

Therefore in spring needle the scattered transport points and the partings of the flesh, and stop when blood comes; where the illness is severe, let the qi be transmitted, where it is light, one circuit suffices. In summer needle the transport points of the network vessels, stop when blood is seen, close the circuit once the qi is spent, and the painful illness will surely descend. In autumn needle the skin, following the partings, the same method above and below, and stop when the spirit changes. In winter needle the orifices of the transport points at the partings: where severe, go straight down; where light, scatter the insertion downward.

Many blue vessels on the arm indicate loss of blood. A cubit pulse that is moderate and rough is called xie-yi, loosening and lassitude.

Qibo says: first measure the fatness or thinness of the form, and by that regulate the emptiness or repletion of the qi — if replete, drain it; if empty, supplement it. One must first clear the blood vessels and only then regulate. Do not inquire after the name of the disease; take balance as the term.

What the five flavours are forbidden to: acrid moves into qi, so where qi is ill do not eat much acrid; salty moves into blood, so where blood is ill do not eat much salty; bitter moves into bone, so where bone is ill do not eat much bitter; sweet moves into flesh, so where flesh is ill do not eat much sweet; sour moves into sinew, so where sinew is ill do not eat much sour. This is called the five prohibitions — let none of them be eaten to excess.

These are the constants of heaven.

When a person has these three, it is called the ruined depot: potent drugs do not treat it and the short needle has nothing to take hold of. In all such cases the skin is broken and the flesh wounded, and blood and qi contend until they turn black.

The south generates heat, heat generates fire, fire generates bitter, bitter generates the heart, the heart generates blood, and blood generates the spleen. In heaven it is heat, in earth fire, in the body the vessels, in qi breathing, and among the viscera the heart. Its nature is summer heat, its virtue manifestation, its action restlessness, its colour red, its transformation abundance, its creature the feathered, its governance brightness, its command steaming sultriness, its change blazing scorching, its calamity burning and searing, its flavour bitter, and its emotion joy. In a year of fire in surplus, blazing summer heat spreads and moves and the metal of the lung receives evil. The people are ill with malaria, scantness of qi, coughing and panting, blood escaping upward, blood discharged downward, pouring below, dryness of the throat and deafness, heat in the centre and heat in the shoulder and back; it answers above to Mars. If it is severe there is pain in the chest, propping fullness and pain in the flanks, pain between the breast, the back and the shoulder blades, pain on the inner side of both arms, heat of the body and pain in the bones, and the soaking spread of the illness. The qi of gathering does not move and the qi of growth shines alone; rain, water, frost and cold arrive; it answers above to Mercury. If lesser yin or lesser yang presides above, fire blazes and scorches, the icy springs dry up and things are burnt and withered; the illness turns to delirious speech and raving, coughing and panting with a noisy breath, and, below, severe bleeding and unending discharge. Where Taiyuan is cut off there is death and no cure; it answers above to Mars.

The era of Blazing Sunlight is called luxuriant growth: the yin qi transforms within, the yang qi flourishes without, blazing heat spreads its transformation, and beings are thereby made abundant. Its transformation growth, its qi high, its governance movement, its command clamour and display, its movement blazing and scorching, reckless and disturbing, its colour red, white and black, its flavour bitter, acrid and salty, its image summer, its channels the hand lesser yin and greater yang, the hand ceasing yin and lesser yang, its viscera the heart and lung, its creature the feathered and the scaly, its thing the vessels, moist. Its illness laughter, malaria, boils and sores, blood flowing out, madness and raving, red eyes. Where the upper is yu it is one with the upright zhi, its harvest is even and its illness convulsion; where the upper is zhi the qi of harvest comes late. If its governance is violent the qi of storage takes its revenge, and now and again bleak congealing appears; in the extreme, rain, frost, hail and biting cold, and evil injures the heart.
