Huáng dì wèn yuē: jué zhī hán rè zhě, hé yě?
The Emperor asks: inversion may be cold and it may be hot — how is that?
Qí bó duì yuē: yáng qì shuāi yú xià, zé wéi hán jué; yīn qì shuāi yú xià, zé wéi rè jué.
Qi Bo replies: when yang qi declines below, this becomes cold inversion; when yin qi declines below, this becomes heat inversion.
3
Dì yuē: rè jué zhī wéi rè yě, bì qǐ yú zú xià zhě, hé yě?
The Emperor asks: in heat inversion the heat always begins beneath the foot — why is that?
4
Qí bó yuē: yáng qì qǐ yú zú wǔ zhǐ zhī biǎo, yīn mài zhě jí yú zú xià, ér jù yú zú xīn, gù yáng qì shèng, zé zú xià rè yě.
Qi Bo says: yang qi rises at the outer side of the five toes of the foot, while the yin vessels gather beneath the foot and collect in the sole. So when yang qi prevails, the sole is hot.
5
Dì yuē: hán jué zhī wéi hán yě, bì cóng wǔ zhǐ ér shàng yú xī zhě, hé yě?
The Emperor asks: in cold inversion the cold always goes up from the five toes to the knee — why is that?
6
Qí bó yuē: yīn qì qǐ yú wǔ zhǐ zhī lǐ, jí yú xī xià, ér jù yú xī shàng, gù yīn qì shèng.
Qi Bo says: yin qi rises at the inner side of the five toes, gathers below the knee and collects above it — so yin qi prevails.
7
Zé cóng wǔ zhǐ zhì xī shàng hán, qí hán yě, bù cóng wài, jiē cóng nèi yě.
Hence there is cold from the five toes up to above the knee. That cold does not come from without — it all comes from within.
8
Dì yuē: hán jué hé shī ér rán yě?
The Emperor asks: what sort of loss brings cold inversion about?
Qí bó yuē: qián yīn zhě, zōng jīn zhī suǒ jù, tài yīn yáng míng zhī suǒ hé yě.
Qi Bo says: the front yin is where the ancestral sinews gather, and where greater yin and yang brightness meet.
Chūn xià zé yáng qì duō ér yīn qì shǎo, qiū dōng zé yīn qì shèng ér yáng qì shuāi.
In spring and summer yang qi is plentiful and yin qi scant; in autumn and winter yin qi flourishes and yang qi declines.
11
Cǐ rén zhě zhì zhuàng, yǐ qiū dōng duó yú suǒ yòng, xià qì shàng zhēng bù néng fù, jīng qì yì xià, xié qì yīn cóng zhī ér shàng yě.
Such a person is robust in constitution, yet through autumn and winter he is robbed by his own spending; the lower qi struggles upward and cannot recover, essence qi spills away below, and the evil qi follows it upward.
Qì yīn yú zhōng, yáng qì shuāi, bù néng shèn yíng qí jīng luò, yáng qì rì sǔn, yīn qì dú zài, gù shǒu zú wéi zhī hán yě.
The qi lodges in the centre; yang qi weakens and can no longer percolate into and nourish the conduits and network vessels. Day by day yang qi is depleted and yin qi is left alone — hence the hands and feet are cold.
13
Dì yuē: rè jué hé rú ér rán yě?
The Emperor asks: and how does heat inversion come to be?
14
Qí bó yuē: jiǔ rù yú wèi, zé luò mài mǎn ér jīng mài xū, pí zhǔ wéi wèi xíng qí jīn yè zhě yě.
Qi Bo says: when wine enters the stomach the network vessels fill and the conduit vessels empty — and the spleen is what moves the fluids on behalf of the stomach.
Yīn qì xū zé yáng qì rù, yáng qì rù zé wèi bù hé, wèi bù hé zé jīng qì jié, jīng qì jié zé bù yíng qí sì zhī yě.
When yin qi is empty yang qi enters; once yang qi enters, the stomach is disordered; once the stomach is disordered, the essence qi is exhausted; and once that is exhausted, the four limbs are not nourished.
16
Cǐ rén bì shuò zuì, ruò bǎo yǐ rù fáng, qì jù yú pí zhōng bù dé sàn, jiǔ qì yǔ gǔ qì xiāng bó, rè shèng yú zhōng, gù rè biàn yú shēn, nèi rè ér niào chì yě.
Such a person is repeatedly drunk, or enters the chamber on a full belly; the qi gathers in the spleen and cannot disperse, the qi of the wine and the qi of the grain press upon each other, and heat flourishes within. Hence the heat spreads over the whole body, with inner heat and red urine.
17
Fú jiǔ qì shèng ér piāo hàn, shèn qì yǒu shuāi, yáng qì dú shèng, gù shǒu zú wéi zhī rè yě.
Now the qi of wine is abundant and fierce, and the kidney qi has been declining, so yang qi prevails alone — hence the hands and feet are hot.
18
Dì yuē: jué huò lìng rén fù mǎn, huò lìng rén bào bù zhī rén, huò zhì bàn rì, yuǎn zhì yī rì nǎi zhī rén zhě, hé yě?
The Emperor asks: inversion sometimes fills the belly, sometimes makes a person suddenly unaware of others, not knowing them again for half a day, or for as long as a whole day — how is that?
19
Qí bó yuē: yīn qì shèng yú shàng zé xià xū, xià xū zé fù zhàng mǎn, yáng qì shèng yú shàng, zé xià qì chóng shàng ér xié qì nì, nì zé yáng qì luàn, yáng qì luàn zé bù zhī rén yě.
Qi Bo says: when yin qi flourishes above, the lower part is empty, and emptiness below means the belly is distended and full. When yang qi flourishes above, the lower qi mounts upward again and the evil qi goes counterflow with it; once there is counterflow the yang qi is disordered, and when yang qi is disordered one no longer knows others.
