Lesser yang takes its root at Qiaoyin; it is named the lesser yang within yin.

The liver is the root of endurance and the abode of the ethereal soul. Its bloom is in the nails, its filling is in the sinews; it generates blood and qi. Its flavour is sour, its colour grey-green; it is the lesser yang within yang, and it communicates with the qi of spring.

Dizziness and reeling, dimmed eyes and deaf ears, full below and empty above, is faulted in the foot shaoyang and jueyin; if severe it enters the liver.
「少陽」讀 shào yáng(太/少對舉之經名讀 shào),與第六篇三陽之少陽同讀。

When the lesser yang ends, there is deafness, all the hundred joints go slack, the eyes stare and their attachments are severed; once the attachments are severed, death comes in a day and a half. At the death the colour turns greenish white first, and then he dies.

When the greater yang pulse arrives, it is flooding, large and long; when the lesser yang pulse arrives, it is now rapid, now sparse, now short, now long; when the yang brilliance pulse arrives, it is floating, large and short.

When the lesser yang viscus arrives alone, this is counterflow qi. If the region before the heel vessel swells suddenly, take the lower transport points. For the lesser yang arriving alone: it is the excess of the one yang.

The constants of a person: greater yang is regularly plentiful in blood and scant in qi; lesser yang is scant in blood and plentiful in qi; yang brightness is plentiful in both qi and blood; lesser yin is scant in blood and plentiful in qi; ceasing yin is plentiful in blood and scant in qi; greater yin is plentiful in qi and scant in blood. These are the constants of heaven.

Above lesser yang, fire qi governs, and in the middle one sees ceasing yin. Above yang brightness, dryness qi governs, and in the middle one sees greater yin. Above greater yang, cold qi governs, and in the middle one sees lesser yin. Above ceasing yin, wind qi governs, and in the middle one sees lesser yang. Above lesser yin, heat qi governs, and in the middle one sees greater yang. Above greater yin, damp qi governs, and in the middle one sees yang brightness. This is what is called the root. Below the root is what is seen in the middle; below what is seen is the tip of the qi. Root and tip are not the same, and the images the qi answers with are different.

In a year of fire in surplus, blazing summer heat spreads and moves and the metal of the lung receives evil. The people are ill with malaria, scantness of qi, coughing and panting, blood escaping upward, blood discharged downward, pouring below, dryness of the throat and deafness, heat in the centre and heat in the shoulder and back; it answers above to Mars. If it is severe there is pain in the chest, propping fullness and pain in the flanks, pain between the breast, the back and the shoulder blades, pain on the inner side of both arms, heat of the body and pain in the bones, and the soaking spread of the illness. The qi of gathering does not move and the qi of growth shines alone; rain, water, frost and cold arrive; it answers above to Mercury. If lesser yin or lesser yang presides above, fire blazes and scorches, the icy springs dry up and things are burnt and withered; the illness turns to delirious speech and raving, coughing and panting with a noisy breath, and, below, severe bleeding and unending discharge. Where Taiyuan is cut off there is death and no cure; it answers above to Mars.

Going against the qi of spring, Shaoyang · lesser yang does not give life, and the liver qi changes inwardly. Going against the qi of summer, Taiyang · greater yang does not grow, and the heart qi is hollow within. Going against the qi of autumn, Taiyin · greater yin does not gather in, and the lung qi is scorched and full. Going against the qi of winter, Shaoyin · lesser yin does not store, and the kidney qi sinks alone.

Huang Di said: I wish to hear it all. Qi Bo said: when lesser yang governs the heaven the qi of fire descends upon it and the qi of the lung follows upward; white arises and metal comes into use; grass and trees suffer calamity; fire appears and blazes and burns, and metal is changed and consumed; great heat thereby moves. The illness is cough, sneezing, snivelling, nosebleed, blocked nose and sores, cold and heat and water swelling. Wind moves over the earth and dust and sand fly. The illness is pain in the heart, pain in the stomach duct, counterflow and obstruction of the diaphragm; its charge is suddenness and speed.
