Chūn sān yuè, cǐ wèi fā chén, tiān dì jù shēng, wàn wù yǐ róng. yè wò zǎo qǐ, guǎng bù yú tíng, pī fà huǎn xíng, yǐ shǐ zhì shēng. shēng ér wù shā, yǔ ér wù duó, shǎng ér wù fá, cǐ chūn qì zhī yìng, yǎng shēng zhī dào yě. nì zhī zé shāng gān, xià wéi hán biàn, fèng zhǎng zhě shǎo.
The three months of spring are called the bringing forth of what was stored. Heaven and earth are both giving birth; the ten thousand things are in bloom. Sleep at night and rise early, walk with a wide stride in the courtyard, let the hair down and slacken the body, so that the will comes to life. Let things live and do not kill; give and do not take away; reward and do not punish. This is the answer to the qi of spring, and it is the way of nourishing life. Going against it harms the liver; in summer there is a cold change, and there is little to hand on to what must grow.

Xià sān yuè, cǐ wèi fán xiù. tiān dì qì jiāo, wàn wù huā shí. yè wò zǎo qǐ, wú yàn yú rì, shǐ zhì wú nù, shǐ huā yīng chéng xiù, shǐ qì dé xiè, ruò suǒ ài zài wài. cǐ xià qì zhī yìng, yǎng zhǎng zhī dào yě. nì zhī zé shāng xīn, qiū wéi jiē nüè, fèng shōu zhě shǎo, dōng zhì zhòng bìng.
The three months of summer are called flourishing and fair. The qi of heaven and earth intermingle; the ten thousand things flower and set fruit. Sleep at night and rise early, do not weary of the sun, keep the will free from anger, let the flowering brilliance come to its bloom, and let the qi find its outlet, as though what one loved were outside. This is the answer to the qi of summer, and it is the way of nourishing growth. Going against it harms the heart; in autumn there is jie malaria, there is little to hand on to what must gather in, and at the winter solstice the illness is grave.

Qiū sān yuè, cǐ wèi róng píng. tiān qì yǐ jí, dì qì yǐ míng, zǎo wò zǎo qǐ, yǔ jī jù xīng, shǐ zhì ān níng, yǐ huǎn qiū xíng, shōu liǎn shén qì, shǐ qiū qì píng, wú wài qí zhì, shǐ fèi qì qīng. cǐ qiū qì zhī yìng, yǎng shōu zhī dào yě. nì zhī zé shāng fèi, dōng wéi sūn xiè, fèng cáng zhě shǎo.
The three months of autumn are called the settled and the level. The qi of heaven turns sharp; the qi of earth turns clear. Sleep early and rise early, get up with the cockerel, keep the will at peace so as to soften the flaying of autumn, gather in the spirit and the qi so that the qi of autumn is level, keep the will from reaching outward, and let the lung qi be pure. This is the answer to the qi of autumn, and it is the way of nourishing the gathering in. Going against it harms the lung; in winter there is food-diarrhoea, and there is little to hand on to what must be stored.

Dōng sān yuè, cǐ wèi bì cáng. shuǐ bīng dì chè, wú rǎo hū yáng, zǎo wò wǎn qǐ, bì dài rì guāng. shǐ zhì ruò fú ruò nì, ruò yǒu sī yì, ruò yǐ yǒu dé, qù hán jiù wēn, wú xiè pí fū, shǐ qì qì duó. cǐ dōng qì zhī yìng, yǎng cáng zhī dào yě. nì zhī zé shāng shèn, chūn wéi wěi jué, fèng shēng zhě shǎo.
The three months of winter are called the shutting in and the storing. Water is ice and the earth is split; do not disturb the yang. Sleep early and rise late, and always wait for the light of the sun. Make the will as though it were lying low, as though it were hidden, as though one held a private thought, as though one had already gained something. Leave the cold and draw near to the warm; do not let anything out through the skin, or the qi will be taken from you again and again. This is the answer to the qi of winter, and it is the way of nourishing the storing. Going against it harms the kidney; in spring there is flaccidity and inversion, and there is little to hand on to what must come to life.

Tiān qì, qīng jìng guāng míng zhě yě. cáng dé bù zhǐ, gù bù xià yě. tiān míng zé rì yuè bù míng, xié hài kǒng qiào, yáng qì zhě bì sè, dì qì zhě mào míng.
The qi of heaven is pure, still, bright and luminous. It stores its virtue away and never stops, and so it does not fall. If the sky becomes over-bright, then sun and moon lose their light, and evils harm the openings; the yang qi is stopped up and shut in, and the qi of earth throws a veil over the brightness.

Yún wù bù jīng, zé shàng yìng bái lù bù xià, jiāo tōng bù biǎo, wàn wù mìng gù bù shī, bù shī zé míng mù duō sǐ. è qì bù fā, fēng yǔ bù jié, bái lù bù xià, zé yù gǎo bù róng, zéi fēng shuò zhì, bào yǔ shuò qǐ, tiān dì sì shí bù xiāng bǎo, yǔ dào xiāng shī, zé wèi yāng jué miè. wéi shèng rén cóng zhī, gù shēn wú qí bìng, wàn wù bù shī, shēng qì bù jié.
When the clouds and mists are not pure, the white dew above does not come down. When the ways between heaven and earth are not opened out, the life of the ten thousand things has nothing to be given from. With nothing given, the famed trees die in numbers. When the bad qi does not get out, when wind and rain keep no measure, when the white dew does not fall, then what was lush withers and does not bloom. Thieving winds come time after time, torrential rains rise again and again, heaven and earth and the four seasons no longer keep one another, and the way is lost — then things are cut off and perish before their middle. Only the sage follows it, and so his body has no strange illness; the ten thousand things do not lose their place, and the qi of life is not used up.
Nì chūn qì, zé shào yáng bù shēng, gān qì nèi biàn; nì xià qì, zé tài yáng bù zhǎng, xīn qì nèi dòng; nì qiū qì, zé tài yīn bù shōu, fèi qì jiāo mǎn; nì dōng qì, zé shào yīn bù cáng, shèn qì dú chén.
Going against the qi of spring, Shaoyang · lesser yang does not give life, and the liver qi changes inwardly. Going against the qi of summer, Taiyang · greater yang does not grow, and the heart qi is hollow within. Going against the qi of autumn, Taiyin · greater yin does not gather in, and the lung qi is scorched and full. Going against the qi of winter, Shaoyin · lesser yin does not store, and the kidney qi sinks alone.
Fú sì shí yīn yáng zhě, wàn wù zhī gēn běn yě. suǒ yǐ shèng rén chūn xià yǎng yáng, qiū dōng yǎng yīn, yǐ cóng qí gēn, gù yǔ wàn wù chén fú yú shēng zhǎng zhī mén. nì qí gēn, zé fá qí běn, huài qí zhēn yǐ.
The yin and yang of the four seasons are the root of the ten thousand things. So the sage nourishes yang in spring and summer and nourishes yin in autumn and winter, following the root; and therefore he rises and sinks with the ten thousand things at the gate of growth. To go against the root is to fell the trunk and ruin the true.
9
Gù yīn yáng sì shí zhě, wàn wù zhī zhōng shǐ yě, sǐ shēng zhī běn yě. nì zhī zé zāi hài shēng, cóng zhī zé kē jí bù qǐ, shì wèi dé dào.
Yin and yang and the four seasons are the ending and the beginning of the ten thousand things; they are the root of death and of life. Go against them and calamity arises; follow them and grievous illness does not get up. This is called getting the way.
10
Dào zhě, shèng rén xíng zhī, yú zhě pèi zhī. cóng yīn yáng zé shēng, nì zhī zé sǐ; cóng zhī zé zhì, nì zhī zé luàn. fǎn shùn wéi nì, shì wèi nèi gé.
As for the way: the sage walks in it, the foolish merely wear it. Follow yin and yang and you live; go against them and you die. Follow them and there is order; go against them and there is disorder. To turn compliance into its opposite and call it opposition — this is called being barred within.
11
Shì gù shèng rén bù zhì yǐ bìng zhì wèi bìng, bù zhì yǐ luàn zhì wèi luàn, cǐ zhī wèi yě. fú bìng yǐ chéng ér hòu yào zhī, luàn yǐ chéng ér hòu zhì zhī, pì yóu kě ér chuān jǐng. dòu ér zhù zhuī, bù yì wǎn hū?
And so the sage does not treat what is already ill — he treats what is not yet ill; he does not order what is already in disorder — he orders what is not yet in disorder. This is what that means. To give medicines once the illness has formed, to bring order once the disorder has formed, is like digging a well only when one is thirsty, or casting an awl only when the fight is on: is that not too late?
