地 dì — earth, the ground (《說文》: 地,元气初分,輕清陽為天,重濁陰為地: when the primal qi first divided, the light and clear yang became heaven and the heavy and turbid yin became earth); 氣 qì — vapour, breath. 地氣 is the qi of earth, the other half of the pair. The chapter gives it two states: clear in autumn, and in the disordered picture it throws a veil over the light.

In brief

The qi of earth, the second half of the pair on which Suwen 2 runs its account of the seasons. In autumn it is clear; in the disordered picture the chapter draws, when the yang qi has been shut up, it is the qi of earth that throws a veil over the brightness — the earth rising where the sky should be.

The qi of heaven is pure, still, bright and luminous. It stores its virtue away and never stops, and so it does not fall. If the sky becomes over-bright, then sun and moon lose their light, and evils harm the openings; the yang qi is stopped up and shut in, and the qi of earth throws a veil over the brightness.

Qi Bo said: how thorough the question is — this is to make the way clear. The numbers begin above and end below. Before the half-year the qi of heaven governs; after the half-year the qi of earth governs; where above and below cross, the junction of qi governs — and the record of the year is complete. Therefore it is said: when the positions are clear, the month of each qi can be known — this is what is called the qi. Huang Di said: I preside over the matter and follow it in practice, yet it does not match its numbers — why? Qi Bo said: the use of qi has more and less, and the reach of transformation has flourishing and decline; decline and flourishing, more and less, all belong to the same transformation. Huang Di said: I wish to hear what this same transformation is like.

Huang Di said: I wish to hear the way of it. Qi Bo said: from the first qi to the third the qi of heaven governs — the constant of prevalence; from the fourth qi to the end the qi of earth governs — the constant of revenge. Where there is prevalence there is revenge; where there is none there is none. Huang Di said: good. What of prevalence after revenge is done? Qi Bo said: when prevalence arrives there is revenge, without a constant number, and it stops only when it declines. If there is prevalence after revenge and no revenge follows, there is harm — this injures life. Huang Di said: why is there illness instead when revenge occurs? Qi Bo said: it dwells in a place not its own, and they do not get on together. When the revenge greatly exceeds its prevalence, the host prevails over it; hence illness instead — the fire, dryness and heat of which it speaks. Huang Di said: how is it treated?
