Qi Bo says: in autumn metal begins to govern and the lung is about to gather and kill; metal is about to overcome fire, and the yang qi is at the confluence points. The yin qi is only just prevailing, and dampness reaches the body; the yin qi is not yet exuberant and cannot penetrate deeply. In a year of fire falling short, cold then moves greatly, the governance of growth is not used, and things flourish and then sink. If the congealing bleakness is extreme, the yang qi does not transform and the glory and the beauty are snapped off; it answers above to Mercury. The people are ill with pain in the chest, propping fullness in the flanks, pain in both flanks, pain between the breast, the back and the shoulder blades and on the inner side of both arms, pent-up veiling and dimness, pain in the heart and sudden loss of voice, enlargement of the chest and abdomen, and pain under the flanks drawing into the back and loins; if it is severe they cannot straighten after bending, and the hip and the thigh feel as if they were sundered; it answers above to Mars and Mercury, and its grain is red. When revenge comes there is pent-up dust, great rain is about to arrive, and the black qi is put to shame; the people are ill with duck’s diarrhoea and fullness of the abdomen, food and drink do not go down, cold in the centre and rumbling in the bowels, discharge pouring with pain in the abdomen, sudden cramp, limpness and impediment, and the feet no longer bearing the body; it answers above to Saturn and Mercury, and the dark grain does not form.

At eight a boy’s kidney qi is solid — the hair grows and the teeth change. At sixteen the kidney qi is full, the heavenly water arrives, and the essence qi overflows and is spent; yin and yang harmonise, so he can beget children. At twenty-four the kidney qi is even and balanced and the sinews and bones are strong, so the wisdom teeth come and growth reaches its extreme. At thirty-two the sinews and bones are at their height and the flesh is full and strong. At forty the kidney qi declines, the hair falls and the teeth wither. At forty-eight the yang qi is exhausted in the upper part, the face is seared and the hair at the temples is streaked white. At fifty-six the liver qi declines and the sinews can no longer move; the heavenly water is exhausted, the essence is scant, the kidney storehouse decays, and the body in every part has reached its extreme. At sixty-four the teeth and the hair go.

The qi of heaven is pure, still, bright and luminous. It stores its virtue away and never stops, and so it does not fall. If the sky becomes over-bright, then sun and moon lose their light, and evils harm the openings; the yang qi is stopped up and shut in, and the qi of earth throws a veil over the brightness.

Thus for forty-five days after the winter solstice the yang qi rises slightly and the yin qi declines slightly; for forty-five days after the summer solstice the yin qi rises slightly and the yang qi declines slightly. Yin and yang have their seasons and keep appointment with the pulse. When the appointment is missed, one knows where the pulse has diverged; and since the divergence has its own timing, one knows the hour of death.

The era of Blazing Sunlight is called luxuriant growth: the yin qi transforms within, the yang qi flourishes without, blazing heat spreads its transformation, and beings are thereby made abundant. Its transformation growth, its qi high, its governance movement, its command clamour and display, its movement blazing and scorching, reckless and disturbing, its colour red, white and black, its flavour bitter, acrid and salty, its image summer, its channels the hand lesser yin and greater yang, the hand ceasing yin and lesser yang, its viscera the heart and lung, its creature the feathered and the scaly, its thing the vessels, moist. Its illness laughter, malaria, boils and sores, blood flowing out, madness and raving, red eyes. Where the upper is yu it is one with the upright zhi, its harvest is even and its illness convulsion; where the upper is zhi the qi of harvest comes late. If its governance is violent the qi of storage takes its revenge, and now and again bleak congealing appears; in the extreme, rain, frost, hail and biting cold, and evil injures the heart.
