黄帝说:明堂是鼻;阙是眉间;庭是额;蕃是颊侧;蔽是耳门。其间要方大,离十步都能见于外,这样的寿必满百岁。
The Emperor said: The hall of light is the nose; the tower is between the brows; the court is the forehead; the screen is the side of the cheek; the cover is the ear gate. Between them they should be square and large, so that at ten paces all can be seen from outside. Such a one will surely reach a hundred years.

The Emperor said: The bone of the hall of light is high and raised, level and straight. The five viscera are ranged in the centre, the six fu press on either side, the head and face rise to the tower and court, the royal palace lies at the lower limit. When the five viscera are at peace in the chest, the true colour arrives and the colour of disease is not seen; the hall of light is moist and clear. How could the five offices fail to be distinguished?

If the pulse mouth is floating and slippery, the illness advances daily; if the man’s ying is deep and slippery, it diminishes daily. If the pulse mouth is slippery and deep, the illness advances daily, within; if the man’s ying pulse is slippery, abundant and floating, it advances daily, without. Where the floating and deep of the pulses and the size of the qi at man’s ying and inch mouth are equal, the illness is hard to cure.

For illness in a viscus, deep and large is easy to cure, small is contrary; for illness in a fu, floating and large is easy to cure. Where the man’s ying is abundant and hard, there is injury from cold; where the qi mouth is abundant and hard, there is injury from food.

For illness born within, treat the yin first and the yang after; to reverse this worsens it. For illness born in yang, treat the outer first and the inner after; to reverse this worsens it. Where the pulse is slippery, large, intermittent and long, the illness comes from without; the eye sees something, the will loathes something; this is a merging of yang qi, and it can be changed and stopped.

These are the regions of the five viscera, six fu, limbs and joints. Each has its part; having its part, use yin to harmonise yang and yang to harmonise yin. When the parts are clearly understood, ten thousand movements are ten thousand correct. To distinguish left and right is called the great way. Man and woman have different positions, hence yin and yang. To examine moisture and withering is what makes a good craftsman.

Deep and turbid is within; floating and moist is without. Yellow-red is wind; blue-black is pain; white is cold; yellow and greasy is pus; still more severe is blood. Severe pain gives cramp; severe cold gives numb skin.

The five colours each appear in their region. Examine their floating and sinking to know shallow and deep; examine their moisture and withering to see success and failure; examine their scattering and gathering to know far and near. Look at the colour above and below to know the seat of illness. Gather the spirit in the heart to know past and present. Therefore, if one reads the qi without subtlety, one does not know right from wrong; fix the attention and do not let it go, and then one knows the new and the old. When the colour is bright but not coarse, deep and large is severe; when it is neither bright nor moist, the illness is not severe.

When a man’s colour is at the king of the face, there is pain in the lower abdomen; below, pain in the testes; if it runs round and straight, pain in the penis. High is the root, low is the head: this is the class of fox hernia and swelling of the genitals.

When a woman’s colour is at the king of the face, it is illness of the bladder and uterus. Scattered means pain; gathered means mass. Square or round, left or right, each follows the shape of the colour. When it follows downward to the sole and becomes excess, with moisture like grease, it is from violent eating of unclean food.

The colours are blue, black, red, white and yellow, all upright and full, each with a separate region. Where the separate region is red, the colour is also as large as an elm pod; at the king of the face it means no day. When the colour is sharp above, the head is empty and points upward; sharp below, it points downward; on left and right, the same rule.
