The south is the red colour; it enters and communicates with the heart. It opens into the ears and stores its essence in the heart; hence the disease is in the five viscera.

Clear yang spreads through the interstices, turbid yin travels to the five viscera; clear yang fills the four limbs, turbid yin returns to the six bowels.

What are called the five storing organs store essential qi and do not discharge it; therefore they may be full, but they cannot be filled.

They have also lost the following of the four seasons and go against what cold and heat require. The thieving wind arrives again and again, empty evil is there morning and evening: inward it reaches the five storing organs and the marrow, outward it injures the openings and the skin. Therefore a small illness is sure to worsen and a great one is sure to kill — and invocation can no longer settle it.

The Emperor asks: there is also illness that does not arise from the body hair — the yang of the five storing organs has been exhausted. Fluids fill the frame, the corporeal soul dwells alone, the essence is orphaned within and the qi spent without, the body can no longer keep company with its clothes, and the four extremities are tight and stir the centre. The qi is refused within and the body altered without. How is this treated?

Whenever one needles the chest or abdomen, one must avoid the five depots. Striking the heart means death within one circuit. Striking the spleen means death in five days. Striking the kidney means death in seven days. Striking the lung means death in five days. Striking the diaphragm is always a wound to the interior: even if the illness appears to mend, the person will certainly die within a year.

The true qi of the depots spreads to the liver; the liver stores the qi of the sinews and membranes.

Those that break out every other day do so because the evil qi presses inward to the five stores and links crosswise with the membrane source. Its road is long, its qi deep, its movement slow: it cannot travel along with the defensive qi and cannot come all the way out, and so the fit comes only every other day.
