A Discourse on the Generation of the Five Storing Organs

Wǔ zàng shēng chéng lùn

The tenth chapter is a working manual for the eye and the finger. It opens by pairing each storing organ with the tissue it governs and the place its health can be seen — vessels and complexion, skin and body hair, sinews and nails, flesh and lips, bone and hair of the head — and then shows what happens when a single flavour is eaten to excess: each one strengthens its own organ and, through it, overcomes the organ that organ holds in check. The middle of the chapter is a colour chart, five shades that mean death and five that mean life, all of them qualified by the same test — whether the colour gleams through, like cinnabar wrapped in white silk, or lies dead on the surface. The close turns to diagnosis: where blood goes when we sleep, where defence qi lodges and where evil qi lodges with it, and a set of worked examples in which a colour and a pulse are read together and given a name — heart obstruction, lung obstruction, liver obstruction, reversal shan, kidney obstruction.

是故多食鹹,則脉凝泣而變色; 是故多食咸,则脉凝泣而变色;
shì gù duō shí xián, zé mài níng sè ér biàn sè;
Therefore eating much salt makes the vessels congeal and stagnate and the colour change: salt strengthens the kidney, which overcomes the heart, and the heart cannot bear it.
多食苦,則皮槁而毛拔; 多食苦,则皮槁而毛拔;
duō shí kǔ, zé pí gǎo ér máo bá;
Eating much bitterness makes the skin withered and the hair come out: bitterness strengthens the heart, and the heart overcomes the lung.
多食辛,則䈥急而爪枯; 多食辛,则筋急而爪枯;
duō shí xīn, zé jīn jí ér zhǎo kū;

Eating much acridity makes the sinews tighten and the nails dry up: acridity strengthens the lung, and the lung overcomes the liver.
多食酸,則肉胝䐢而脣揭; 多食酸,则肉胝䐢而唇揭;
duō shí suān, zé ròu zhī zhòu ér chún jiē;

Eating much sweetness makes the bones ache and the hair fall: sweetness strengthens the spleen, and the spleen overcomes the kidney.
cǐ wǔ wèi zhī suǒ shāng yě,
This is the harm done by the five flavours: each nourishes its own organ, and taken to excess it harms the organ that organ overcomes.
gù xīn yù kǔ, fèi yù xīn, gān yù suān, pí yù gān, shèn yù xián, cǐ wǔ wèi zhī suǒ hé yě.
So the heart wants bitterness, the lung acridity, the liver sourness, the spleen sweetness, the kidney saltiness — this is how the five flavours are matched to the five storing organs.

The qi of the five storing organs: a green like dead grass, a yellow like unripe bitter orange, a black like soot, a red like clotted and spoilt blood, a white like dry bone — each of these means death. These are the five colours as they appear in death.

Green like a kingfisher’s feather, red like a cock’s comb, yellow like a crab’s belly, white like lard, black like a crow’s feather — each of these means life. These are the five colours as they appear in life.
生於心,如以縞裹朱; 生于心,如以缟裹朱;
shēng yú xīn, rú yǐ gǎo guǒ zhū;
Life in the heart is like vermilion wrapped in white silk;
生於肺,如以縞裹紅; 生于肺,如以缟裹红;

in the spleen, like the fruit of the trichosanthes wrapped in white silk;
shēng yú shèn, rú yǐ gǎo guǒ zǐ, cǐ wǔ zàng suǒ shēng zhī wài róng yě.
in the kidney, like purple wrapped in white silk — this is the outer bloom that the five storing organs generate.
sè wèi dāng wǔ zàng, bái dāng fèi xīn, chì dāng xīn kǔ, qīng dāng gān suān, huáng dāng pí gān, hēi dāng shèn xián.
Colour and flavour correspond to the five storing organs: white and acridity to the lung, red and bitterness to the heart, green and sourness to the liver, yellow and sweetness to the spleen, black and saltiness to the kidney.
gù bái dāng pí, chì dāng mài, qīng dāng jīn, huáng dāng ròu, hēi dāng gǔ.
And so white corresponds to the skin, red to the vessels, green to the sinews, yellow to the flesh, black to the bone.
zhū mài zhě jiē shǔ yú mù, zhū suǐ zhě jiē shǔ yú nǎo, zhū jīn zhě jiē shǔ yú jié, zhū xuè zhě jiē shǔ yú xīn, zhū qì zhě jiē shǔ yú fèi, cǐ sì zhī bā xī zhī zhāo xī yě.
All the vessels belong to the eye; all the marrow to the brain; all the sinews to the joints; all the blood to the heart; all the qi to the lung. This is the morning-and-evening traffic of the four limbs and the eight ravines.
gù rén wò, xuè guī yú gān, gān shòu xuè ér néng shì, zú shòu xuè ér néng bù, zhǎng shòu xuè ér néng wò, zhǐ shòu xuè ér néng shè.
So when a person lies down, the blood returns to the liver. The liver, receiving blood, can see; the foot, receiving blood, can walk; the palm can grip; the fingers can take hold.
wò chū ér fēng chuī zhī, xuè níng yú fū zhě wéi bì, níng yú mài zhě wéi sè, níng yú zú zhě wéi jué.
If one goes out on waking and the wind blows: blood congealed in the skin makes obstruction; congealed in the vessels makes stagnation; congealed in the feet makes reversal cold.
cǐ sān zhě, xuè xíng ér bù dé fǎn qí kǒng, gù wéi bì. jué yě.
In all three the blood moves but cannot get back into its passages — hence obstruction, hence reversal. (The base text breaks this in two; other editions read “bi and jue” as one phrase.)
rén yǒu dà gǔ shí èr fēn, xiǎo xī sān bǎi wǔ shí sì míng, shǎo shí èr shù, cǐ jiē wèi qì zhī suǒ liú zhǐ, xié qì zhī suǒ kè yě, zhēn shí yuán ér qù zhī.
A person has twelve divisions of the great valleys and three hundred and fifty-four named lesser ravines, less the twelve transport points. These are where the defence qi comes to rest and where evil qi lodges as a guest; needle and stone follow along them and drive it out.
zhěn bìng zhī shǐ, wǔ jué wéi jì.
To begin examining an illness, take the five decisions as the rule.
yù zhī qí shǐ, xiān jiàn qí mǔ.
To know where it began, first establish its mother: the qi that ought to be in season. Only then can one ask which qi is the evil and which is the right.
suǒ wèi wǔ jué zhě, wǔ mài yě.
What is called the five decisions is the five pulses.
shì yǐ tóu tòng diān jí, xià xū shàng shí, guò zài zú shào yīn, jù yáng, shèn zé rù shèn.
Thus head pain and disease of the crown, empty below and full above, is faulted in the foot shaoyin and the foot great yang; if severe it enters the kidney.

xīn fán tóu tòng, bìng zài gé zhōng, guò zài shǒu jù yáng, shào yīn.
Vexation of the heart and head pain, with the disease in the diaphragm, is faulted in the hand great yang and hand shaoyin.
