Qi Bo said: the east generates wind, wind generates wood, wood generates sour, sour generates the liver, the liver generates the sinews, and the sinews generate the heart. In heaven it is the dark, in the human being it is the dao, in earth it is transformation; transformation generates the five flavours, the dao generates wisdom, the dark generates spirit, and transformation generates qi. Spirit is wind in heaven, wood in earth, sinew in the body, softness in qi, and the liver among the viscera. Its nature is warmth, its virtue harmony, its action movement, its colour blue-green, its transformation flowering, its creature the hairy, its governance dispersal, its command to spread and issue forth, its change to snap and pull, its calamity falling, its flavour sour, and its emotion anger. Anger harms the liver and sorrow overcomes anger; wind harms the liver and dryness overcomes wind; sour harms the sinews and acridity overcomes sour.

In a year of earth falling short, wind then moves greatly, the qi of transformation issues no command, and though plants and trees grow lush they are tossed about and flower without setting fruit; it answers above to Jupiter. The people are ill with gruel diarrhoea and sudden turmoil, a heavy body and pain in the abdomen, sinews and bones that shake and return, flesh that twitches and is sore, and quickness to anger; the qi of storage takes up its work, the hibernating creatures attach themselves early, and all are ill with cold in the centre; it answers above to Jupiter and Saturn.

The Yellow Emperor asks: heaven has eight winds, the channels have five winds — what does this mean? Qi Bo replies: the eight winds give off evil; becoming the wind of the channels, it touches the five viscera, and the evil qi brings forth disease.
「以爲經風」——八風發邪,以爲經風,觸五藏而發病;此風自外入,由經及藏,與本站所收第四十二篇「風者,百病之長」之義相貫;**「風」本篇11見**

Wind is the beginning of the hundred diseases; when the yang qi is pure and still, the flesh and its crevices close and refuse it, and even a great wind or a virulent poison cannot do harm. This too comes of keeping to the sequence of the seasons.

Thus cold-heat disease kills at daybreak; internal heat and heat disease kill at noon; wind disease kills at sunset; water disease kills at midnight. One whose pulse is now scattered, now rapid, now slow, now hurried dies on a day that mounts the four quarters of the year.

Thus when pain comes first and swelling after, qi has damaged form; when swelling comes first and pain after, form has damaged qi. The Emperor says: What does it mean that an illness, once formed, changes? Qibo says: Wind, once formed, becomes cold and heat; heat, once formed, becomes wasting in the centre; counterflow, once formed, becomes disease of the crown; long-standing wind becomes food-diarrhoea; wind in the vessels becomes pestilent sores. The transformations of illness cannot be counted.

Therefore wind is the chief of the hundred diseases. When wind-cold lodges in a person it makes the fine body hair stand straight and the skin close so that heat develops; at that point it can be sweated out and dispersed. Or there is impediment, numbness, swelling and pain, and at that point it can be removed by hot compresses, fire cautery and needling.

Huang Di said: I wish to hear it all. Qi Bo said: when lesser yang governs the heaven the qi of fire descends upon it and the qi of the lung follows upward; white arises and metal comes into use; grass and trees suffer calamity; fire appears and blazes and burns, and metal is changed and consumed; great heat thereby moves. The illness is cough, sneezing, snivelling, nosebleed, blocked nose and sores, cold and heat and water swelling. Wind moves over the earth and dust and sand fly. The illness is pain in the heart, pain in the stomach duct, counterflow and obstruction of the diaphragm; its charge is suddenness and speed.
