A Discourse on the Subtle Meaning of the Six

Liù wēi zhǐ dà lùn

The way of heaven, Huang Di begins, is too far to hold: it is like a floating cloud that comes to meet you, and like looking down into a deep abyss. The abyss can still be fathomed; of the cloud no one knows the end. He has heard his master say, again and again, that one must attend reverently to the way of heaven, and he has laid the saying away — and privately he doubts it. So he asks for the six-six divisions of the way of heaven, and for what waxes and wanes in them. Qi Bo answers with a ring. Above and below have their positions; left and right have their records. To the right of lesser yang, yang brightness governs; to the right of yang brightness, greater yang; to the right of greater yang, ceasing yin; to the right of ceasing yin, lesser yin; to the right of lesser yin, greater yin; to the right of greater yin, lesser yang again. This is the tip of the qi, and one reads it facing south, waiting — shifting the shadow to fix the positions, standing square. Then the same six are given from above: fire governs lesser yang, dryness governs yang brightness, cold governs greater yang, wind governs ceasing yin, heat governs lesser yin, damp governs greater yin — and each has a qi seen in the middle. That is the root. Below the root is what is seen in the middle; below that is the tip. Root and tip are not the same, and so the images the qi answers with are not the same either. Then comes the art of timing, which is what the chapter is for. The season arrives and the qi arrives with it: harmony. The season arrives and the qi does not: the qi that comes falls short. The season has not come and the qi arrives before it: the qi is in surplus. What answers to the season is accord, what does not is counterflow, and counterflow breeds change and change breeds illness. The answer shows itself in growing things, and in the qi and the pulse. The geography follows. To the right of the manifest brightness is the position of sovereign fire; from there one retires a step to minister fire, and then advances step by step through earth, metal, water and wood, and back to sovereign fire. Under each of the six, another bears down on it: water under minister fire, earth under water, wind under earth, metal under wind, fire under metal, and the yin essence under sovereign fire. Huang Di asks why, and gets the sentence the whole tradition afterwards quotes: when it is excessive there is harm; what bears it down then restrains it; with restraint there is generation and transformation. In its own position the qi is correct and the change is slight; out of its position it is evil and the change is severe. So to the years that meet. The wood circuit meeting mao, fire meeting wu, earth meeting the end of the four seasons, metal meeting you, water meeting zi — these are year meetings, years of level qi. Where the circuit of the year also meets the qi seen above it, the Celestial Primordial Register calls it a heaven tally; where a heaven tally and a year meeting fall together, it is the great unity. The three are then graded like offices: the heaven tally is the holder of the law, the year's position the issuer of commands, the great unity the honoured one — and being struck by them gives, respectively, an illness swift and perilous, slow and lingering, or sudden and fatal. When sovereign and minister change places, the one is accord and the other counterflow: that is what the two fires mean. The last third measures the year itself. A step is sixty degrees and a remainder; twenty-four steps heap up a surplus of a hundred ke, and that makes a day. Positions have an end and a beginning, the qi has an initial and a middle, and above and below are sought differently. The qi of heaven begins at jia, the qi of earth at zi, and the two joined are called the standing of the year. And then the numbers: in a jia zi year the six qi begin and end at such and such a ke, in a yi chou year at others, in bing yin and ding mao again others — four years of them, after which the wu chen year begins again at the first ke, and that round of four is one ji. Hence the years group by threes: yin, wu and xu together; mao, wei and hai together; chen, shen and zi together; si, you and chou together. What is all this for? Speaking of heaven, seek the root; speaking of earth, seek the position; speaking of the human being, seek the meeting of the qi — for between the positions above and below, where the qi meet, is where the human being dwells. Above the heavenly pivot the qi of heaven governs, below it the qi of earth, and in the region between them the qi of the human follows and the ten thousand things go by it. The initial is thirty degrees and a remainder, and the middle follows the same rule; the initial is the qi of earth, the middle the qi of heaven, and that is how the two are told apart. Rising and falling are heaven and earth taking turns; what has risen descends and belongs to heaven, what has descended rises and belongs to earth, and from high and low calling to one another, change is made. The close is the most quoted passage in the chapter. Cold and damp meet, dryness and heat face one another, wind and fire come together; the qi has prevalence and revenge, and where there is change evil qi dwells. A thing is born of transformation and reaches its extreme through change; success and ruin lean and hide within movement, and when movement does not cease, change arises. If exit and entry are abandoned the spirit mechanism perishes, and if rising and falling cease the qi that stands is isolated and in peril: without them there is no being born, growing, maturing, ageing and ending, and no being born, growing, transforming, gathering and storing. No vessel is without them. Hence it is said that without form there is no affliction — and the one who neither generates nor transforms is the true person, who is one with the way.

Huáng dì wèn yuē: wū hū! Yuǎn zāi! Tiān zhī dào yě, rú yíng fú yún, ruò shì shēn yuān. Shì shēn yuān shàng kě cè, yíng fú yún mò zhī qí jí. Fū zǐ shuò yán, jǐn fèng tiān dào, yú wén ér cáng zhī, xīn sī yì zhī, bù zhī qí suǒ wèi yě. Yuàn fū zǐ yì zhì, jìn yán qí shì, lìng zhōng bù miè, jiǔ ér bù jué, tiān zhī dào kě dé wén hū?
Huang Di asked: ah! how far-reaching it is — the way of heaven! It is like meeting a floating cloud, like looking into a deep abyss. The deep abyss can still be fathomed, but of the floating cloud that comes to meet one, no one knows its limit. You have said repeatedly, master, that one must attend reverently to the way of heaven; I have heard it and laid it away, yet in my heart I privately doubt, not knowing what it means. I wish you would let your mind overflow and speak of this matter in full, so that it may never be extinguished and never be cut off — may the way of heaven be told to me?
Qí bó qǐ shǒu zài bài duì yuē: míng hū zāi! Wèn tiān zhī dào yě. Cǐ yīn tiān zhī xù, shèng shuāi zhī shí yě. Dì yuē: yuàn wén tiān dào liù liù zhī jié, shèng shuāi hé yě?
Qi Bo bowed his head to the ground, prostrated himself twice and answered: how clear the question is! You ask about the way of heaven. This follows the order of heaven and the season of waxing and waning. Huang Di said: I wish to hear of the six-six divisions of the way of heaven. What is the waxing and waning?
Qí bó yuē: shàng xià yǒu wèi, zuǒ yòu yǒu jì. Gù shào yáng zhī yòu, yáng míng zhì zhī; yáng míng zhī yòu, tài yáng zhì zhī; tài yáng zhī yòu, jué yīn zhì zhī; jué yīn zhī yòu, shào yīn zhì zhī; shào yīn zhī yòu, tài yīn zhì zhī; tài yīn zhī yòu, shào yáng zhì zhī. Cǐ suǒ wèi qì zhī biāo, gài nán miàn ér dài yě. Gù yuē: yīn tiān zhī xù, shèng shuāi zhī shí, yí guāng dìng wèi, zhèng lì ér dài zhī. Cǐ zhī wèi yě.
Qi Bo said: above and below have their positions; left and right have their records. Thus to the right of lesser yang, yang brightness governs; to the right of yang brightness, greater yang governs; to the right of greater yang, ceasing yin governs; to the right of ceasing yin, lesser yin governs; to the right of lesser yin, greater yin governs; to the right of greater yin, lesser yang governs. This is what is called the tip of the qi — one faces south and waits. Hence it is said: follow the order of heaven and the season of waxing and waning, shift the shadow and fix the positions, stand square and wait for them. This is what that means.
Shào yáng zhī shàng, huǒ qì zhì zhī, zhōng jiàn jué yīn. Yáng míng zhī shàng, zào qì zhì zhī, zhōng jiàn tài yīn. Tài yáng zhī shàng, hán qì zhì zhī, zhōng jiàn shào yīn. Jué yīn zhī shàng, fēng qì zhì zhī, zhōng jiàn shào yáng. Shào yīn zhī shàng, rè qì zhì zhī, zhōng jiàn tài yáng. Tài yīn zhī shàng, shī qì zhì zhī, zhōng jiàn yáng míng. Suǒ wèi běn yě. Běn zhī xià, zhōng zhī jiàn yě; jiàn zhī xià, qì zhī biāo yě. Běn biāo bù tóng, qì yìng yì xiàng.
Above lesser yang, fire qi governs, and in the middle one sees ceasing yin. Above yang brightness, dryness qi governs, and in the middle one sees greater yin. Above greater yang, cold qi governs, and in the middle one sees lesser yin. Above ceasing yin, wind qi governs, and in the middle one sees lesser yang. Above lesser yin, heat qi governs, and in the middle one sees greater yang. Above greater yin, damp qi governs, and in the middle one sees yang brightness. This is what is called the root. Below the root is what is seen in the middle; below what is seen is the tip of the qi. Root and tip are not the same, and the images the qi answers with are different.
Dì yuē: qí yǒu zhì ér zhì, yǒu zhì ér bù zhì, yǒu zhì ér tài guò, hé yě? Qí bó yuē: zhì ér zhì zhě hé, zhì ér bù zhì, lái qì bù jí yě; wèi zhì ér zhì, lái qì yǒu yú yě.
Huang Di said: sometimes the season arrives and the qi arrives with it; sometimes the season arrives and the qi does not; sometimes it arrives in excess. Why is this? Qi Bo said: the season arrives and the qi arrives with it — that is harmony. The season arrives and the qi does not — the qi that comes falls short. The season has not arrived and the qi arrives before it — the qi that comes is in surplus.
Dì yuē: zhì ér bù zhì, wèi zhì ér zhì, rú hé? Qí bó yuē: yìng zé shùn, fǒu zé nì, nì zé biàn shēng, biàn zé bìng. Dì yuē: shàn. Qǐng yán qí yìng.
Huang Di said: when it is due and does not arrive, and when it is not due and arrives first — what then? Qi Bo said: if it answers to the season, that is accord; if it does not, that is counterflow. Counterflow gives rise to change, and change gives rise to illness. Huang Di said: good. Speak of how it answers.
歧伯曰:物生其應也,氣脉其應也。帝曰:善。願聞地理之應,六節氣位何如?歧伯曰:顯明之右,君火之位也。君火之右,退行一步,相火治之;復行一步,土氣治之;復行一步,金氣治之;復行一步,水氣治之;復行一步,木氣治之;復行一步,君火治之; 歧伯曰:物生其应也,气脉其应也。帝曰:善。愿闻地理之应,六节气位何如?歧伯曰:显明之右,君火之位也。君火之右,退行一步,相火治之;复行一步,土气治之;复行一步,金气治之;复行一步,水气治之;复行一步,木气治之;复行一步,君火治之;
Qí bó yuē: wù shēng qí yìng yě, qì mài qí yìng yě. Dì yuē: shàn. Yuàn wén dì lǐ zhī yìng, liù jié qì wèi hé rú? Qí bó yuē: xiǎn míng zhī yòu, jūn huǒ zhī wèi yě. Jūn huǒ zhī yòu, tuì xíng yī bù, xiàng huǒ zhì zhī; fù xíng yī bù, tǔ qì zhì zhī; fù xíng yī bù, jīn qì zhì zhī; fù xíng yī bù, shuǐ qì zhì zhī; fù xíng yī bù, mù qì zhì zhī; fù xíng yī bù, jūn huǒ zhì zhī;
Qi Bo said: the growing of things is its answer; the qi and the pulse are its answer. Huang Di said: good. I wish to hear the answer of the pattern of the earth — how do the positions of the six divisions of qi stand? Qi Bo said: to the right of the manifest brightness is the position of sovereign fire. To the right of sovereign fire, retiring one step, minister fire governs; advancing one step further, earth qi governs; one step further, metal qi governs; one step further, water qi governs; one step further, wood qi governs; one step further, sovereign fire governs.
Xiàng huǒ zhī xià, shuǐ qì chéng zhī; shuǐ wèi zhī xià, tǔ qì chéng zhī; tǔ wèi zhī xià, fēng qì chéng zhī; fēng wèi zhī xià, jīn qì chéng zhī; jīn wèi zhī xià, huǒ qì chéng zhī; jūn huǒ zhī xià, yīn jīng chéng zhī.
Beneath minister fire, water qi bears down upon it. Beneath the position of water, earth qi bears down. Beneath the position of earth, wind qi bears down. Beneath the position of wind, metal qi bears down. Beneath the position of metal, fire qi bears down. Beneath sovereign fire, the yin essence bears down.
Dì yuē: hé yě? Qí bó yuē: kàng zé hài, chéng nǎi zhì, zhì zé shēng huà, wài liè shèng shuāi, hài zé bài luàn, shēng huà dà bìng. Dì yuē: shèng shuāi hé rú?
Huang Di said: why is this? Qi Bo said: when it is excessive there is harm; what bears it down then restrains it. With restraint there is generation and transformation, and waxing and waning are arrayed without. With harm there is ruin and disorder, and generation and transformation are gravely ill. Huang Di said: how is it with waxing and waning?
Qí bó yuē: fēi qí wèi zé xié, dāng qí wèi zé zhèng, xié zé biàn shèn, zhèng zé wēi. Dì yuē: hé wèi dāng wèi? Qí bó yuē: mù yùn lín mǎo, huǒ yùn lín wǔ, tǔ yùn lín sì jì, jīn yùn lín yǒu, shuǐ yùn lín zǐ, suǒ wèi suì huì, qì zhī píng yě.
Qi Bo said: not in its place it is evil; in its right place it is correct. Evil makes the change severe; correct makes it slight. Huang Di said: what is called being in place? Qi Bo said: the wood circuit meeting mao, the fire circuit meeting wu, the earth circuit meeting the end of the four seasons, the metal circuit meeting you, the water circuit meeting zi — this is the year meeting, a year of level qi.
Dì yuē: fēi wèi hé rú? Qí bó yuē: suì bù yǔ huì yě. Dì yuē: tǔ yùn zhī suì, shàng jiàn tài yīn; huǒ yùn zhī suì, shàng jiàn shào yáng, shào yīn; jīn yùn zhī suì, shàng jiàn yáng míng; mù yùn zhī suì, shàng jiàn jué yīn; shuǐ yùn zhī suì, shàng jiàn tài yáng. Nài hé?
Huang Di said: and when it is not in place? Qi Bo said: the year does not meet it. Huang Di said: in a year of the earth circuit, greater yin is seen above; in a year of the fire circuit, lesser yang or lesser yin is seen above; in a year of the metal circuit, yang brightness is seen above; in a year of the wood circuit, ceasing yin is seen above; in a year of the water circuit, greater yang is seen above. How is this to be spoken of?
Qí bó yuē: tiān zhī yǔ huì yě, gù tiān yuán cè yuē tiān fú. Tiān fú suì huì hé rú? Qí bó yuē: tài yī tiān fú zhī huì yě.
Qi Bo said: this is meeting with heaven, and so the Celestial Primordial Register calls it the heaven tally. And when the heaven tally and the year meeting come together — what then? Qi Bo said: this is the meeting of the great unity heaven tally.
Dì yuē: qí guì jiàn hé rú? Qí bó yuē: tiān fú wéi zhí fǎ, suì wèi wéi xíng lìng, tài yī tiān fú wéi guì rén. Dì yuē: xié zhī zhòng yě, nài hé?
Huang Di said: how do they rank in honour? Qi Bo said: the heaven tally is like the one who holds the law; the position of the year is like the one who issues commands; the great unity heaven tally is like the honoured one. Huang Di said: and when evil strikes the person?
Qí bó yuē: zhòng zhí fǎ zhě, qí bìng sù ér wēi; zhòng xíng lìng zhě, qí bìng xú ér tè; zhòng guì rén zhě, qí bìng bào ér sǐ.
Qi Bo said: struck by the holder of the law, the illness is swift and perilous. Struck by the issuer of commands, the illness is slow and lingering. Struck by the honoured one, the illness is sudden and brings death.
Dì yuē: wèi zhī yì yě hé rú? Qí bó yuē: jūn wèi chén zé shùn, chén wèi jūn zé nì. Nì zé qí bìng jìn, qí hài sù; shùn zé qí bìng yuǎn, qí hài wēi, suǒ wèi èr huǒ yě.
Huang Di said: and when the positions are exchanged? Qi Bo said: when the sovereign occupies the minister’s place, that is accord; when the minister occupies the sovereign’s, that is counterflow. In counterflow the illness is near and its harm swift; in accord the illness is far and its harm slight. This is what the two fires mean.
Dì yuē: shàn. Yuàn wén qí bù hé rú? Qí bó yuē: suǒ wèi bù zhě, liù shí dù ér yǒu jī, gù èr shí sì bù, jī yíng bǎi kè ér chéng rì yě.
Huang Di said: good. I wish to hear about the step. Qi Bo said: what is called a step is sixty degrees and a remainder; thus twenty-four steps heap up a surplus of one hundred ke, and that makes a day.
Dì yuē: liù qì yìng wǔ xíng zhī biàn hé rú? Qí bó yuē: wèi yǒu zhōng shǐ, qì yǒu chū zhōng, shàng xià bù tóng, qiú zhī yì yì yě.
Huang Di said: how do the six qi answer to the changes of the five phases? Qi Bo said: positions have an end and a beginning; the qi has an initial and a middle. Above and below are not the same, and the way one seeks them differs as well.
Dì yuē: qiú zhī nài hé? Qí bó yuē: tiān qì shǐ yú jiǎ, dì qì shǐ yú zǐ, zǐ jiǎ xiāng hé, mìng yuē suì lì, jǐn hòu qí shí, qì kě yǔ qī.
Huang Di said: how does one seek them? Qi Bo said: the qi of heaven begins at jia; the qi of earth begins at zi. Zi and jia join, and it is called the standing of the year. Watch the season attentively and the qi can be expected.
Dì yuē: yuàn wén qí suì, liù qì shǐ zhōng zǎo yàn hé rú? Qí bó yuē: míng hū zāi wèn yě. Jiǎ zǐ zhī suì, chū zhī qì, tiān shù shǐ yú shuǐ xià yī kè, zhōng yú bā shí qī kè bàn, èr zhī qì, shǐ yú bā shí qī kè liù fēn, zhōng yú qī shí wǔ kè sān zhī qì, shǐ yú qī shí liù kè, zhōng yú liù shí èr kè bàn; sì zhī qì, shǐ yú liù shí èr kè liù fēn, zhōng yú wǔ shí kè; wǔ zhī qì, shǐ yú wǔ shí yī kè, zhōng yú sān shí qī kè bàn; liù zhī qì, shǐ yú sān shí qī kè liù fēn, zhōng yú èr shí wǔ kè; suǒ wèi chū liù, tiān zhī shù yě.
Huang Di said: I wish to hear how the six qi of a year begin and end, early and late. Qi Bo said: how clear the question is! In a jia zi year, the first qi: the heavenly number begins at the first ke of the water clock and ends at the eighty-seventh ke and a half. The second qi: it begins at the eighty-seventh ke six fen and ends at the seventy-fifth ke. The third qi: it begins at the seventy-sixth ke and ends at the sixty-second ke and a half. In a ding mao year, the first qi: the heavenly number begins at the seventy-sixth ke and ends at the sixty-second ke and a half. The second qi: it begins at the sixty-second ke six fen and ends at the fiftieth ke. The third qi: it begins at the fifty-first ke and ends at the thirty-seventh ke and a half. The fourth qi: it begins at the thirty-seventh ke six fen and ends at the twenty-fifth ke. The fifth qi: it begins at the twenty-sixth ke and ends at the twelfth ke and a half. The sixth qi: it begins at the twelfth ke six fen and ends at the hundredth ke of the water clock. This is what is called the fourth six — the number of heaven.
Cì wù chén suì, chū zhī qì fù shǐ yú yī kè, cháng rú shì wú yǐ, zhōu ér fù shǐ. Dì yuē: yuàn wén qí suì hòu hé rú?
Next, in a wu chen year, the first qi begins again at the first ke. It is always thus, without cease, turning round and beginning again. Huang Di said: I wish to hear about the season of the year.
Qí bó yuē: xī hū zāi wèn yě. Rì xíng yī zhōu, tiān qì shǐ yú yī kè; rì xíng zài zhōu, tiān qì shǐ yú èr shí liù kè; rì xíng sān zhōu, tiān qì shǐ yú wǔ shí yī kè; rì xíng sì zhōu, tiān qì shǐ yú qī shí liù kè; rì xíng wǔ zhōu, tiān qì fù shǐ yú yī kè, suǒ wèi yī jì yě.
Qi Bo said: how thorough the question is! When the sun has travelled one circuit, the qi of heaven begins at the first ke; at two circuits it begins at the twenty-sixth ke; at three circuits at the fifty-first ke; at four circuits at the seventy-sixth ke; at five circuits it begins again at the first ke. This is what is called one ji.
Shì gù yín wǔ xū suì qì huì tóng, mǎo wèi hài suì qì huì tóng, chén shēn zǐ suì qì huì tóng, sì yǒu chǒu suì qì huì tóng, zhōng ér fù shǐ.
Therefore in yin, wu and xu years the qi of the year meet as one; in mao, wei and hai years they meet as one; in chen, shen and zi years they meet as one; in si, you and chou years they meet as one. It ends and begins again.
Dì yuē: yuàn wén qí yòng yě. Qí bó yuē: yán tiān zhě qiú zhī běn, yán dì zhě qiú zhī wèi, yán rén zhě qiú zhī qì jiāo. Dì yuē: hé wèi qì jiāo?
Huang Di said: I wish to hear its use. Qi Bo said: speaking of heaven, seek its root. Speaking of earth, seek its position. Speaking of the human being, seek the meeting of the qi. Huang Di said: what is the meeting of the qi?
Qí bó yuē: shàng xià zhī wèi, qì jiāo zhī zhōng, rén zhī jū yě. Gù yuē: tiān shū zhī shàng, tiān qì zhǔ zhī; tiān shū zhī xià, dì qì zhǔ zhī. Qì jiāo zhī fēn, rén qì cóng zhī, wàn wù yóu zhī. Cǐ zhī wèi yě.
Qi Bo said: between the positions above and below, in the midst of the meeting of the qi, is where the human being dwells. Hence it is said: above the heavenly pivot, the qi of heaven governs; below the heavenly pivot, the qi of earth governs. In the region where the qi meet, the qi of the human follows and the ten thousand things go by it. This is what that means.
Dì yuē: hé wèi chū zhōng? Qí bó yuē: chū fán sān shí dù ér yǒu jī, zhōng qì tóng fǎ. Dì yuē: chū zhōng hé yě? Qí bó yuē: suǒ yǐ fēn tiān dì yě.
Huang Di said: what are the initial and the middle? Qi Bo said: the initial is thirty degrees and a remainder, and the middle qi follows the same rule. Huang Di said: what are they for? Qi Bo said: they divide heaven from earth.
Dì yuē: yuàn zú wén zhī. Qí bó yuē: chū zhě, dì qì yě, zhōng zhě, tiān qì yě. Dì yuē: qí shēng jiàng, hé rú? Qí bó yuē: qì zhī shēng jiàng, tiān dì zhī gēng yòng yě.
Huang Di said: I wish to hear it through. Qi Bo said: the initial is the qi of earth; the middle is the qi of heaven. Huang Di said: how is it with the rising and falling of the qi? Qi Bo said: the rising and falling of the qi is heaven and earth taking turns in their use.
Dì yuē: yuàn wén qí yòng hé rú? Qí bó yuē: shēng yǐ ér jiàng, jiàng zhě wèi tiān. Jiàng yǐ ér shēng, shēng zhě wèi dì. Tiān qì xià jiàng, qì liú yú dì. Dì qì shàng shēng, qì téng yú tiān. Gù gāo xià xiāng zhào, shēng jiàng xiāng yīn, ér biàn zuò yǐ.
Huang Di said: I wish to hear how it acts. Qi Bo said: having risen it then descends, and what descends belongs to heaven. Having descended it then rises, and what rises belongs to earth. The qi of heaven descends and flows into the earth; the qi of earth rises and mounts to heaven. Thus high and low call to one another, rising and falling depend on one another, and change is made.
Dì yuē: shàn. Hán shī xiāng gòu, zào rè xiāng lín, fēng huǒ xiāng zhí, qí yǒu wén hū? Qí bó yuē: qì yǒu shèng fù, shèng fù zhī zuò, yǒu dé yǒu huà, yǒu yòng yǒu biàn, biàn zé xié qì jū zhī.
Huang Di said: good. Cold and damp meet, dryness and heat face one another, wind and fire come together — is there something to be heard in this? Qi Bo said: the qi has prevalence and revenge. When prevalence and revenge arise there is virtue and there is transformation, there is use and there is change; and where there is change, evil qi takes up its dwelling.
Dì yuē: hé wèi xié hū? Qí bó yuē: fú wù zhī shēng cóng yú huà, wù zhī jí yóu hū biàn, biàn huà zhī xiāng bó, chéng bài zhī suǒ yóu yě. Gù qì yǒu wǎng fù, yòng yǒu chí sù, sì zhě zhī yǒu ér huà ér biàn, fēng zhī lái yě.
Huang Di said: what is called evil? Qi Bo said: the birth of a thing follows from transformation; the extreme of a thing comes from change. Transformation and change pressing upon one another is whence success and ruin come. Therefore the qi has going and returning, and its use has slow and swift. These four being present, there is transformation and there is change — and that is how wind comes.
Dì yuē: chí sù wǎng fù, fēng suǒ yóu shēng, ér huà ér biàn, gù yīn shèng shuāi zhī biàn ěr. Chéng bài yǐ fú yóu hū zhōng, hé yě?
Huang Di said: slow and swift, going and returning — that is where wind is born; and transformation and change follow upon the alternation of waxing and waning. Success and ruin leaning and hiding, moving within — what is that?
Qí bó yuē: chéng bài yǐ fú shēng hū dòng, dòng ér bù yǐ, zé biàn zuò yǐ. Dì yuē: yǒu qī hū? Qí bó yuē: bù shēng bù huà, jìng zhī qī yě.
Qi Bo said: success and ruin, leaning and hiding, are born of movement; when movement does not cease, change arises. Huang Di said: is there a term to it? Qi Bo said: not generating and not transforming — that is the term of stillness.
Dì yuē: bù shēng huà hū? Qí bó yuē: chū rù fèi, zé shén jī huà miè, shēng jiàng xī zé qì lì gū wēi. Gù fēi chū rù zé wú yǐ shēng zhǎng zhuàng lǎo yǐ. Fēi shēng jiàng zé wú yǐ shēng zhǎng huà shōu cáng. Shì yǐ shēng jiàng chū rù, wú qì bù yǒu. Xiǎo dà, qī yǒu jìn yuǎn, sì zhě zhī yǒu, ér guì cháng shǒu, fǎn cháng zé zāi hài zhì yǐ.
Huang Di said: is there no generating and transforming? Qi Bo said: if exit and entry are abandoned, the spirit mechanism perishes in transformation; if rising and falling cease, the qi that stands is isolated and in peril. Therefore without exit and entry there is no means to be born, to grow, to mature, to age and to end; without rising and falling there is no means to be born, to grow, to transform, to gather and to store. Thus rising and falling, exit and entry: there is no vessel that is without them. Vessels are small or great, their terms near or far; these four being present, what is precious is to hold constantly to them. To go against the constant brings disaster.
Gù yuē wú xíng wú huàn, cǐ zhī wèi yě. Dì yuē: shàn. Yǒu bù shēng bù huà hū? Qí bó yuē: xī hū zāi wèn yě. Yǔ dào hé tóng, wéi zhēn rén yě. Dì yuē: shàn.
Hence it is said: without form there is no affliction. This is what that means. Huang Di said: good. Is there one who neither generates nor transforms? Qi Bo said: how thorough the question is! To be one with the way — that is the true person alone. Huang Di said: good.
