A Discourse on the Movement of the Five Circuits

Wǔ yùn xíng dà lùn

The Celestial Primordial Record ended by naming the six origins, and Suwen 67 opens with the difficulty that naming leaves behind. Huang Di sits in the Bright Hall, sets right the framework of heaven, and puts to Qi Bo a question he says he has already taken as far as he can: he has heard from his master how many the five circuits are, but what he was told only covered each of the five qi governing its own year, with the first jia settling the circuit. Gui Yu Qu gives the two lists that do not fit together — earth over jia and ji, metal over yi and geng, water over bing and xin, wood over ding and ren, fire over wu and gui; and then lesser yin over zi and wu, greater yin over chou and wei, lesser yang over yin and shen, yang brightness over mao and you, greater yang over chen and xu, ceasing yin over si and hai. Why, he asks, do these not accord with yin and yang? Qi Bo's answer draws the distinction the chapter is built on. The yin and yang of the human body can be counted; count them by ten and they extend to a hundred, by a thousand and they extend to ten thousand. The yin and yang of heaven and earth cannot be extended by numbers at all — they are named by their images. Asked where it begins, he quotes the Celestial Primordial Register of the Great Beginning, which locates each of the five coloured heavens by the lunar mansions it crosses: vermilion through Niu and Nü at the wu division, yellow through Xin and Wei at the si division, azure through Wei, Shi, Liu and Gui, white through Kang, Di, Mao and Bi, dark through Zhang, Yi, Lou and Wei. The wu and ji divisions — Kui and Bi, Jiao and Zhen — are the gate and door of heaven and earth, and this is where observation begins. The middle of the chapter is a manual for reading the year. Above and below are the upper and lower places of the year; left and right are named facing north for what is above and facing south for what is below, and each of the six is given the pair that flanks it. When the upper and the lower meet and cold and summer heat stand over one another, qi that accords brings harmony and qi that does not accord brings illness — and when qi accords and there is still illness, it is because what is below stands over what is above. What is above moves right and what is below moves left, and this is why earth, which answers to heaven and so might be thought still, is said to move. Pressed on whether earth is at the bottom, Qi Bo says that it is below the human being but stands in the midst of the great emptiness, held up by the great qi: dryness dries it, summer heat steams it, wind moves it, dampness moistens it, cold hardens it, fire warms it. And the changes of heaven and earth cannot be read in the pulse — the Pulse Method says so plainly. The last movement is the long five-direction passage, the fullest statement in the Suwen of what a phase is. Each direction generates a qi, the qi a phase, the phase a flavour, the flavour a viscus, the viscus a tissue, and the tissue the next viscus in the generating cycle. Each is then given its place in heaven, in earth, in the body, in qi and among the viscera, and after that its nature, virtue, action, colour, transformation, creature, governance, command, change, calamity, flavour and emotion — and told what harms it and what overcomes that harm. Two entries in the north are left wanting in the base text, and are printed here as they stand. The chapter closes with the rule that qi in excess restrains what it overcomes and insults what it does not, while qi in deficit is insulted from both directions; the insulter receives evil in turn, for want of awe.

Huang Di sat in the Bright Hall, set right the framework of heaven, looked out over the eight extremes, examined and established the five constants, and then called the heavenly teacher to ask: the treatises say that the movement and stillness of heaven and earth take spirit brightness as their framework, and that the rising and falling of yin and yang show their signs in cold and summer heat. I have heard the numbers of the five circuits from you, master, but what you spoke of was only that each of the five qi governs a year — that the first jia settles the circuit — and I have reasoned on from there.

Gui Yu Qu said: earth governs jia and ji, metal governs yi and geng, water governs bing and xin, wood governs ding and ren, fire governs wu and gui. Above zi and wu, lesser yin presides; above chou and wei, greater yin presides; above yin and shen, lesser yang presides; above mao and you, yang brightness presides; above chen and xu, greater yang presides; above si and hai, ceasing yin presides. These do not accord with yin and yang — why is that?
Qí bó yuē: shì míng dào yě, cǐ tiān dì zhī yīn yáng yě, fú shù zhī kě shǔ zhě, rén zhōng zhī yīn yáng yě. Rán suǒ hé shù zhī kě dé zhě yě. Fú yīn yáng zhě, shǔ zhī kě shí, tuī zhī kě bǎi; shǔ zhī kě qiān, tuī zhī kě wàn. Tiān dì yīn yáng zhě, bù yǐ shù tuī, yǐ xiàng zhī wèi yě.
Qi Bo said: this is a clear matter. This is the yin and yang of heaven and earth; what can be counted out in numbers is the yin and yang within the human being, yet the numbers by which the two are joined can still be arrived at. As for yin and yang: count them by ten and they extend to a hundred, count them by a thousand and they extend to ten thousand. But the yin and yang of heaven and earth are not to be extended by numbers — they are named by their images.

Huang Di said: I wish to hear where it begins.

Qi Bo said: how bright this question is. Your servant has read the text of the Celestial Primordial Register of the Great Beginning: the qi of the vermilion heaven runs through Niu and Nü, at the wu division; the qi of the yellow heaven runs through Xin and Wei, at the si division; the qi of the azure heaven runs through Wei, Shi, Liu and Gui; the qi of the white heaven runs through Kang, Di, Mao and Bi; the qi of the dark heaven runs through Zhang, Yi, Lou and Wei. What are called the wu and ji divisions — Kui and Bi, Jiao and Zhen — are the gate and the door of heaven and earth. This is where observation begins and where the dao is born; one cannot fail to penetrate it.

Huang Di said: good. The treatises say that heaven and earth are the above and below of the ten thousand things, and that left and right are the road of yin and yang. I do not know what that means.

Qi Bo said: what is called above and below is the upper and the lower place of the year, by which one sees where yin and yang reside. As for left and right, for whatever stands above: when ceasing yin is seen, lesser yin is on the left and greater yang on the right; when lesser yin is seen, greater yin is on the left and ceasing yin on the right; when greater yin is seen, lesser yang is on the left and lesser yin on the right; when lesser yang is seen, yang brightness is on the left and greater yin on the right; when yang brightness is seen, greater yang is on the left and lesser yang on the right; when greater yang is seen, ceasing yin is on the left and yang brightness on the right. Qi Bo said: with ceasing yin above, lesser yang is below, yang brightness on its left and greater yin on its right; with lesser yin above, yang brightness is below, greater yang on its left and lesser yang on its right; with greater yin above, greater yang is below, ceasing yin on its left and yang brightness on its right; with lesser yang above, ceasing yin is below, lesser yin on its left and greater yang on its right; with yang brightness above, lesser yin is below, greater yin on its left and ceasing yin on its right; with greater yang above, greater yin is below, lesser yang on its left and lesser yin on its right.

This is to name their places while facing south, and it speaks of what is seen. When the upper and the lower meet and cold and summer heat stand over one another, qi that accords brings harmony and qi that does not accord brings illness.
Dì yuē: qì xiāng dé ér bìng zhě, hé yě?
Huang Di said: if the qi accord and yet there is illness, why is that?
Qí bó yuē: yǐ xià lín shàng, bù dāng wèi yě.
Qi Bo said: it is that what is below stands over what is above, and the place is not the right one.
Dì yuē: dòng jìng hé rú?
Huang Di said: how is it with movement and stillness?
Qí bó yuē: shàng zhě yòu xíng, xià zhě zuǒ xíng, zuǒ yòu zhōu tiān, yú ér fù huì yě.
Qi Bo said: what is above moves to the right, what is below moves to the left; left and right circle the heavens and meet again at the remainder.

Huang Di said: I have heard Gui Yu Qu say that what answers to earth is still; yet you, master, now say that what is below moves to the left, and I do not know what that means. I wish to hear how it comes about.

Qi Bo said: as to the movement and stillness of heaven and earth and the shifting and return of the five phases — although Gui Yu Qu could observe its signs above, he still could not illuminate it throughout. As for the working of change: heaven hangs out its images, earth gives things their forms, the seven luminaries weave their courses through the great emptiness, and the five phases attach themselves to the earth. Earth is that which carries the forms and kinds that are generated; the emptiness is that which arrays the essential qi answering to heaven. The movement of form and essence is as the root and trunk to the branches and leaves. Look up at those images above and what is far off can still be known.

Qi Bo said: earth is below the human being, and yet it stands in the midst of the great emptiness.
Dì yuē: píng hū?
Huang Di said: what does it rest upon?
Qí bó yuē: dà qì jǔ zhī yě. Zào yǐ gān zhī, shǔ yǐ zhēng zhī, fēng yǐ dòng zhī, shī yǐ rùn zhī, hán yǐ jiān zhī, huǒ yǐ wēn zhī. Gù fēng hán zài xià, zào rè zài shàng, shī qì zài zhōng, huǒ yóu xíng qí jiān, hán shǔ liù rù, gù lìng xū ér shēng huà yě.
Qi Bo said: the great qi holds it up. Dryness dries it, summer heat steams it, wind moves it, dampness moistens it, cold hardens it, fire warms it. And so wind and cold are below, dryness and heat above, damp qi in the middle, and fire wanders through between them; cold and summer heat enter in six ways, and this is what lets the emptiness bring forth generation and transformation.
Gù zào shèng zé dì gān, shǔ shèng zé dì rè, fēng shèng zé dì dòng, shī shèng zé dì ní, hán shèng zé dì liè, huǒ shèng zé dì gù yǐ.
And so when dryness prevails the earth is dry, when summer heat prevails the earth is hot, when wind prevails the earth moves, when dampness prevails the earth turns to mud, when cold prevails the earth splits, and when fire prevails the earth hardens.

Huang Di said: how does one observe the qi of heaven and earth?
Qí bó yuē: tiān dì zhī qì, shèng fù zhī zuò, bù xíng yú zhěn yě. Mài fǎ yuē: tiān dì zhī biàn, wú yǐ mài zhěn. Cǐ zhī wèi yě.
Qi Bo said: the arising of prevalence and of the revenge that answers it, in the qi of heaven and earth, does not take shape in the pulse. The Pulse Method says: the changes of heaven and earth cannot be diagnosed by the pulse. This is what that means.
Dì yuē: jiàn qì hé rú?
Huang Di said: how is it with the intervening qi?

Qi Bo said: follow where the qi resides and look for it on the left and on the right.
