The Yellow Emperor, at leisure, dismissed those about him and asked Qibo: I have heard the canon of the nine needles, and its discourse on the yin and yang, the reverse and the compliant, and the six channels is complete. I should like to receive what was transmitted by mouth.

Qibo answered: the beginning of the hundred diseases is always born of wind and rain, cold and heat, yin and yang, joy and anger, food and drink, dwelling and rest. Great fright and sudden terror separate the blood and qi, break yin and yang, cut off the channels and network vessels, obstruct the vessel roads, turn yin and yang against each other, hold back the guard qi, empty the channels, and put blood and qi out of order. What is not discoursed in the canon — let me set out its methods.

Qí Bó dá yuē: wèi qì zhòu rì xíng yú yáng, yè bàn zé xíng yú yīn. yīn zhě zhǔ yè, yè zhě wò. yáng zhě zhǔ shàng, yīn zhě zhǔ xià. gù yīn qì jī yú xià, yáng qì wèi jìn, yáng yǐn ér shàng, yīn yǐn ér xià, yīn yáng xiāng yǐn, gù shuò qiàn. yáng qì jìn, yīn qì shèng, zé mù míng; yīn qì jìn, ér yáng qì shèng, zé wù yǐ. xiě zú shào yīn, bǔ zú tài yáng.
Qibo answered: the guard qi moves in yang by day and at midnight moves in yin. Yin governs night, and at night one sleeps. Yang governs above and yin governs below. So when yin qi gathers below and yang qi is not yet exhausted, yang draws upward and yin draws downward; yin and yang pull at each other, and so one yawns repeatedly. When yang qi is exhausted and yin qi is full, the eyes close; when yin qi is exhausted and yang qi is full, one wakes. Drain foot shaoyin and tonify foot taiyang.
