Huáng Dì wèn yú Qí Bó yuē: jīng yán xià rì shāng shǔ, qiū bìng nüè, nüè zhī fā yǐ shí, qí gù hé yě?
The Yellow Emperor asked Qi Bo: The classic says that one harmed by summerheat in summer falls ill with intermittent fever in autumn, and that its attacks come at set times. What is the reason?

Qí Bó duì yuē: xié kè yú fēng fǔ, bìng xún lǚ ér xià, wèi qì yī rì yī yè cháng dà huì yú fēng fǔ, qí míng rì rì xià yī jié, gù qí rì zuò yàn, cǐ qí xiān kè yú jí bèi yě. gù měi zhì yú fēng fǔ, zé còu lǐ kāi, còu lǐ kāi zé xié qì rù, xié qì rù zé bìng zuò, cǐ suǒ yǐ rì zuò shàng yàn yě. wèi qì zhī xíng fēng fǔ, rì xià yī jié, èr shí yī rì xià zhì wěi dǐ, èr shí èr rì rù jí nèi, zhù yú fú chōng zhī mài. qí xíng jiǔ rì, chū yú quē pén zhī zhōng, qí qì shàng xíng, gù qí bìng shāo yì.
Qi Bo answered: When evil lodges at the wind palace, the illness follows the spine downward; guarding qi gathers greatly at the wind palace once in a day and a night, and on the next day it descends one joint, so the attack comes a day later — this is because the evil first lodged in the spine and back. Hence whenever it reaches the wind palace the interstices open; opening, evil enters; entering, the illness breaks out: this is why the daily attack comes later and later. As guarding qi moves from the wind palace down one joint a day, on the twenty-first day it reaches the tail bone, and on the twenty-second enters within the spine and pours into the hidden thoroughfare vessel. It travels nine days and comes out in the middle of the collar-bone basin; its qi rises, and so the illness slightly worsens.

zhì qí nèi tuán yú wǔ zàng, héng lián mù yuán, qí dào yuǎn, qí qì shēn, qí xíng chí, bù néng rì zuò, gù cì rì nǎi xù jī ér zuò yān.
When the evil strikes the five viscera within and runs across to the membrane source, its road is far, its qi deep, its movement slow, and it cannot break out daily; hence it gathers and breaks out the next day.
Huáng Dì yuē: wèi qì měi zhì yú fēng fǔ, còu lǐ nǎi fā, fā zé xié rù yān. qí wèi qì rì xià yī jié, zé bù dāng fēng fǔ, nài hé? Qí Bó yuē: fēng fǔ wú cháng, wèi qì zhī suǒ yīng, bì kāi qí còu lǐ, qì zhī suǒ shè jié, zé qí fǔ yě.
The Emperor said: Guarding qi opens the interstices only when it reaches the wind palace, and opening lets evil in. But if guarding qi descends a joint a day, it is no longer at the wind palace — what then? Qi Bo said: The wind palace has no fixed place; wherever guarding qi answers, there the interstices must open, and the joint where the qi lodges is its palace.

Huáng Dì yuē: shàn. fū fēng zhī yǔ nüè yě, xiāng yǔ tóng lèi, ér fēng cháng zài, ér nüè tè yǐ shí xiū, hé yě? Qí Bó yuē: fēng qì liú qí chù, nüè qì suí jīng luò, chén yǐ nèi tuán, gù wèi qì yīng nǎi zuò yě. dì yuē: shàn.
The Emperor said: Good. Wind and intermittent fever are of one kind, yet wind is always present while fever rests at set times — why? Qi Bo said: Wind qi stays where it is, while fever qi follows the channels and network vessels, sinking to strike within; hence it breaks out only when guarding qi answers. The Emperor said: Good.
Huáng Dì wèn yú shào shī yuē: yú wén sì shí bā fēng zhī zhòng rén yě, gù yǒu hán shǔ. hán zé pí fū jí ér còu lǐ bì, shǔ zé pí fū huǎn ér còu lǐ kāi, zéi fēng xié qì, yīn dé yǐ rù hū? jiāng bì xū bā zhèng xū xié, nǎi néng shāng rén hū?
The Emperor asked Shao Shi: I have heard that the four seasons’ eight winds injure men, and that there is cold and heat in it. When cold, the skin is tight and the interstices closed; when hot, the skin is slack and the interstices open. Does thieving wind and evil qi get in by this? Or must it be the empty evil of the eight uprights that can injure a man?

shào shī dá yuē: bù rán. zéi fēng xié qì zhī zhòng rén yě, bù dé yǐ shí. rán bì yīn qí kāi yě, qí rù shēn, qí nèi jí bìng, qí bìng rén yě zú bào; yīn qí bì yě, qí rù qiǎn yǐ liú, qí bìng yě xú yǐ chí.
Shao Shi answered: Not so. Thieving wind and evil qi injure a man without regard to season. But when it enters because of opening, it goes deep and the illness within is extreme, striking a man suddenly; when it enters because of closing, it goes shallow and stays, and the illness is slow and late.

Huáng Dì yuē: yǒu hán wēn hé shì, còu lǐ bù kāi, rán yǒu zú bìng zhě, qí gù hé yě?
The Emperor said: When cold and warmth are mild and fitting and the interstices do not open, yet illness comes suddenly — what is the reason?

shào shī dá yuē: dì fú zhī xié rù hū! suī píng jū, qí còu lǐ kāi bì huǎn jí, qí gù cháng yǒu shí yě. Huáng Dì yuē: kě dé wén hū? shào shī yuē: rén yǔ tiān dì xiāng cān yě, yǔ rì yuè xiāng yīng yě.
Shao Shi answered: Does the Emperor not know how evil enters? Even in ordinary times, the opening and closing, slackness and tightness of the interstices have their own times. The Emperor said: May I hear it? Shao Shi said: Man takes part in heaven and earth and answers to sun and moon.

gù yuè mǎn zé hǎi shuǐ xī shèng, rén xuè qì jī, jī ròu chōng, pí fū zhì, máo fà jiān, còu lǐ què, yān gòu zhuó, dāng shì zhī shí, suī yù zéi fēng, qí rù qiǎn bù shēn. zhì qí yuè guō kōng, zé hǎi shuǐ dōng shèng, rén qì xuè xū, qí wèi qì qù, xíng dú jū, jī ròu jiǎn, pí fū zòng, còu lǐ kāi, máo fà cán, jiāo lǐ bó, yān gòu luò, dāng shì zhī shí, yù zéi fēng, zé qí rù shēn, qí bìng rén yě zú bào.
Hence when the moon is full the sea water swells in the west, man’s blood and qi gather, muscle is full, skin is tight, hair is firm, the interstices are closed and the soot and grime cling. At such a time, though he meet thieving wind, it enters shallowly and not deep. When the moon’s disc is empty the sea water swells in the east, man’s qi and blood are empty, his guarding qi departs, his form dwells alone, muscle diminishes, skin slackens, interstices open, hair is broken, the flesh striae are thin and the grime falls away. At such a time, meeting thieving wind, it enters deep and strikes a man suddenly.

Huáng Dì yuē: qí yǒu cù rán bào sǐ bào bìng zhě, hé yě?
The Emperor said: Some die suddenly or fall ill suddenly — why?

shào shī dá yuē: sān xū zhě, qí sǐ bào jí yě. dé sān shí zhě, xié bù néng shāng rén yě. Huáng Dì yuē: yuàn wén sān xū. shào shī yuē: chéng nián zhī shuāi, féng yuè zhī kōng, shī shí zhī hé, yīn wéi zéi fēng suǒ shāng, shì wèi sān xū. gù lùn bù zhī sān xū, gōng fǎn wéi cū.
Shao Shi answered: With three empties death is sudden and swift; with three solids evil cannot injure a man. The Emperor said: I wish to hear of the three empties. Shao Shi said: To ride the year’s decline, meet the moon’s emptiness and lose the season’s harmony, and so be injured by thieving wind — this is called the three empties. Hence one who discusses illness without knowing the three empties is a coarse worker instead.

dì yuē: yuàn wén sān shí. shào shī yuē: féng nián zhī shèng, yù yuè zhī mǎn, dé shí zhī hé, suī yǒu zéi fēng xié qì, bù néng wēi zhī yě. Huáng Dì yuē: shàn hū zāi lùn! míng hū zāi dào! qǐng cáng zhī jīn kuì, mìng yuē sān shí. rán cǐ yī fū zhī lùn yě.
The Emperor said: I wish to hear the three solids. Shao Shi said: To meet the year’s abundance, encounter the moon’s fullness and attain the season’s harmony, then though there be thieving wind and evil qi, they cannot endanger him. The Emperor said: How fine the discourse! How clear the way! Pray keep it in the golden coffer and name it the three solids. Yet this is the teaching of one man.

shào shī yuē: hòu cǐ zhě, cháng yǐ dōng zhì zhī rì, tài yī lì yú yè zhé zhī gōng, qí zhì yě, tiān bì yīng zhī yǐ fēng yǔ zhě yǐ. fēng yǔ cóng nán fāng lái zhě, wéi xū fēng, zéi shāng rén zhě yě. qí yǐ yè bàn zhì yě, wàn mín jiē wò ér fú fàn yě, gù qí suì mín xiǎo bìng. qí yǐ zhòu zhì zhě, wàn mín xiè duò, ér jiē zhòng yú xū fēng, gù wàn mín duō bìng. xū xié rù kè yú gǔ, ér bù fā yú wài. zhì qí lì chūn, yáng qì dà fā, còu lǐ kāi, yīn lì chūn zhī rì, fēng cóng xī fāng lái, wàn mín yòu jiē zhòng yú xū fēng, cǐ liǎng xié xiāng bó, jīng qì jié dài zhě yǐ. gù zhū féng qí fēng ér yù qí yǔ zhě, mìng yuē yù suì lù yān. yīn suì zhī hé ér shǎo zéi fēng zhě, mín shǎo bìng ér shǎo sǐ; suì duō zéi fēng xié qì, hán wēn bù hé, zé mín duō bìng ér sǐ yǐ.
Shao Shi said: To wait on this, always on the day of the winter solstice, when the Great One stands in the palace of Yezhe, heaven must answer his arrival with wind and rain. Rain and wind from the south are empty wind, which injures men thievishly. If it comes at midnight, all the people lie down and do not meet it, and so in that year they are little ill. If it comes by day, the people are slack and all are struck by the empty wind, and so many are ill. Empty evil lodges in the bone and does not issue outward. At the beginning of spring, when yang qi greatly issues and the interstices open, and on that day wind comes from the west, the people are all struck by empty wind again; the two evils strike each other and the channel qi knots and is interrupted. Hence all who meet its wind and encounter its rain are said to meet the year’s exposure. When the year is harmonious and thieving winds are few, the people are little ill and few die; when the year has many thieving winds and evil qi, and cold and warmth are not in harmony, many fall ill and die.

Shao Shi answered: On the first day of the first month, when the Great One dwells in the palace of Tianliu, if on that day a northwest wind blows without rain, many people die. If on the first day of the first month at dawn a north wind blows, in spring many die. If at dawn the north wind travels, those who fall ill are three in ten. If at midday a north wind blows, in summer many die; if at dusk, in autumn many die. With north wind all day, of those who fall gravely ill six in ten die. If on the first day of the first month the wind comes from the south, it is called the drought land; from the west, white bones — the state will have calamity and many will die. If from the east, houses are torn and sand and stones raised, and the state has great disaster. If from the southeast, in spring there is death. If on the first day of the first month the sky is clear and warm without wind, grain is cheap and the people are not ill; if cold with wind, grain is dear and many are ill. This is what is called waiting on the year’s wind, which injures men.

If on the chou day of the second month there is no wind, many have heart and belly illness; if on the xu day of the third month it is not warm, many have cold and heat; if on the si day of the fourth month it is not hot, many have jaundice; if on the shen day of the tenth month it is not cold, many die suddenly. All that is called wind tears houses, breaks trees, raises sand and stones, lifts the fine hair and opens the interstices.
