Therefore it is said: when the sage treats illness he must know the yin and yang of heaven and earth, the ordering of the four seasons, the five viscera and six receptacles, the female and the male, the outer and the inner, and what needling, moxa, stone and potent drugs each govern; he takes human affairs at ease, so as to make clear the way of the canon; noble and base, rich and poor have each their differing kinds and principles; he asks whether a man is young or grown, and the principle of courage and cowardice; he examines the divisions, knows the root and beginning of the illness, and in the eight upright and the nine indicators his diagnosis must match.

In the service of the needle there must be a rule: above look to the heavenly light, below govern the eight uprights, to ward off anomalous evil and to observe the hundred clans; examine emptiness and fullness, and do not offend against their evil. If one meets heaven’s dew and encounters the year’s emptiness, though one rescue, one cannot prevail, and instead suffers its calamity.

Eight is the winds. The winds answer to man’s eight joints of thigh and arm, the empty winds of the eight uprights. When the eight winds injure a man they lodge within the bone seams, the lower back and spine, the joints and interstices, making deep obstruction. So for this needle one must make the body long and the tip sharp, to take deep evil and distant obstruction.

The Emperor asked Shao Shi: I have heard that the four seasons’ eight winds injure men, and that there is cold and heat in it. When cold, the skin is tight and the interstices closed; when hot, the skin is slack and the interstices open. Does thieving wind and evil qi get in by this? Or must it be the empty evil of the eight uprights that can injure a man?
