The Yellow Emperor said: All diseases, when they first arise, must start from dryness and dampness, cold and heat, wind and rain, yin and yang, joy and anger, food and drink, dwelling and rest. Qi combines and takes form; it finds a viscus and takes a name. This I know. But most diseases are clear in the morning, quiet by day, worse at dusk and severe at night. Why?
Qí Bó yuē: sì shí zhī qì shǐ rán.

Qi Bo said: Spring generates, summer grows, autumn harvests, winter stores — this is the constant of qi, and man likewise answers to it. Divide one day into four seasons: the morning is spring, noon is summer, sunset is autumn, midnight is winter. In the morning man’s qi begins to generate and the qi of disease declines, so one is clear in the morning. At noon man’s qi grows, and growing it overcomes the evil, so one is quiet. At dusk man’s qi begins to decline and the evil qi begins to generate, so one is worse. At midnight man’s qi enters the viscera and the evil qi dwells alone in the body, so one is severe.

Qi Bo said: That is because it does not answer to the qi of the four seasons, and a single viscus governs the disease alone. It must be severe in the season that the viscus qi cannot overcome, and rise in the season that it can overcome.
