The Transmission of the Master

師傳

Shī chuán

This chapter is about compliance, and it begins as a political essay before it becomes a medical one. The Emperor asks for the master's private teaching, and Qibo answers with a single word: comply. Governing a people, governing a household, treating a patient — none is done by forcing. Even the pulse is only one instance of the principle. The four phrases that follow are the most quoted in the chapter: entering a state ask its customs, entering a house ask its taboos, ascending the hall ask its rites, facing the sick ask what suits them. They are a consultation technique, and they are placed before any discussion of needles or drugs. The middle section turns to the problem of the powerful patient. A lord who wants what harms him cannot be forbidden, because forbidding crosses his will; he cannot be indulged either, because indulgence worsens the disease. The solution offered is rhetorical rather than pharmacological: tell him what ruins him, tell him what is good, lead him to what suits him, open to him what distresses him. It is a remarkable passage in a medical canon, and it assumes that persuasion works on anyone who does not wish to die.The technical core comes at the end, and it answers a question of access. The viscera can be read in the face, but a prince in court will not submit to being handled. Qibo's reply is that the body and limbs are the cover of the viscera, so the same information can be taken at a distance — shoulder, throat, breastbone, the pouches under the eyes, the bridge of the nose. The chapter closes on a small physical examination that needs no permission. It is also the plainest statement in the book of a rule that later practitioners would formalise as the four examinations: ask before you look, and look before you touch. The order is not accidental. Customs, taboos, rites and the patient's own preference come first, because without them the physician will treat the disease and miss the person.

The Yellow Emperor said: I have heard that my former master kept certain things in his heart and did not set them on boards. I wish to hear them and keep them, and to act upon them: above, to govern the people; below, to govern myself; to keep the hundred families free of disease, high and low harmonious and close, virtue flowing down, descendants without anxiety, transmitted to later ages without end. May I hear them?

Qibo said: how far-reaching a question! To govern the people and to govern oneself, to treat others and to treat oneself, to treat the small and to treat the great, to govern a state and to govern a household — none of these can be done by opposing; only by compliance. Compliance is not only the compliance and reversal of yin and yang in the pulse; the hundred families and the people all wish their wills to be complied with.
Huáng Dì yuē: shùn zhī nài hé?
The Emperor said: how does one comply?
Qí Bó yuē: rù guó wèn sú, rù jiā wèn huì, shàng táng wèn lǐ, lín bìng rén wèn suǒ biàn.
Qibo said: entering a state, ask its customs; entering a house, ask what is taboo; ascending the hall, ask its rites; facing the sick, ask what suits them.
Huáng Dì yuē: biàn bìng rén nài hé?
The Emperor said: how does one suit the sick?

Qibo said: one with inner heat and wasting thirst is suited by cold; one of the cold-middle kind is suited by heat. Heat in the stomach dissolves the grain and makes the heart feel suspended and always hungry. When the skin above the navel is hot and the intestines are hot, the stool comes out yellow like gruel. When the skin below the navel is cold and the stomach is cold, the abdomen distends. When the intestines are cold there is rumbling and undigested diarrhoea. Stomach cold with intestinal heat gives distension and diarrhoea; stomach heat with intestinal cold gives easy hunger and pain and distension in the lower abdomen.

The Emperor said: the stomach wants cold and the intestines want hot drink; the two oppose each other, so how is one to suit them? And the great lords and men of blood, proud and self-indulgent, who think little of others and whom no one can restrain — restrain them and their will is crossed, indulge them and their disease grows. How is one to suit them, and what is treated first?
Qí Bó yuē: rén zhī qíng, mò bù wù sǐ ér lè shēng. gào zhī yǐ qí bài, yǔ zhī yǐ qí shàn, dǎo zhī yǐ qí suǒ biàn, kāi zhī yǐ qí suǒ kǔ, suī yǒu wú dào zhī rén, wū yǒu bù tīng zhě hū?
Qibo said: it is human nature to hate death and delight in life. Tell them what ruins them, speak to them of what is good, lead them to what suits them, open to them what distresses them; and even a man without the way — how should he not listen?
Huáng Dì yuē: zhì zhī nài hé?
The Emperor said: how is it treated?
Qí Bó yuē: chūn xià xiān zhì qí biāo, hòu zhì qí běn; qiū dōng xiān zhì qí běn, hòu zhì qí biāo.
Qibo said: in spring and summer treat the branch first and the root after; in autumn and winter treat the root first and the branch after.
Huáng Dì yuē: biàn qí xiāng nì zhě, nài hé?
The Emperor said: where the two are opposed and one seeks to suit them, what then?
Qí Bó yuē: biàn cǐ zhě, shí yǐn yī fú, yì yù shì hán wēn. hán wú qī chuàng, shǔ wú chū hàn. shí yǐn zhě, rè wú zhuó zhuó, hán wú cāng cāng. hán wēn zhōng shì, gù qì jiāng chí, nǎi bù zhì xié pì yě.
Qibo said: to suit them, food, drink and clothing must also fit cold and warmth. In cold, do not be wretched with chill; in heat, do not sweat. In food and drink, let heat not scorch and cold not chill the teeth. With cold and warmth both fitting, the qi holds firm and evil cannot enter.

The Emperor said: the root viscera are read from body, limbs and the fleshy mounds, to know the size of the five viscera and six receptacles. But when the great lords and princes enthroned in court ask, who can press and feel them before answering?
Qí Bó yuē: shēn xíng zhī jié zhě, zàng fǔ zhī gài yě, fēi miàn bù zhī yuè yě.
Qibo said: body, limbs and joints are the cover of the viscera; they are not the reading of the face.
Huáng Dì yuē: wǔ zàng zhī qì, yuè yú miàn zhě, yú yǐ zhī zhī yǐ. yǐ zhī jié zhī ér yuè zhī, nài hé?
The Emperor said: that the qi of the five viscera are read in the face, I already know. How is one to read them from the limbs?

The Emperor said: good. I should like to hear how the six receptacles are read.

Qibo said: among the six receptacles the stomach is the sea; with broad frame, thick neck and open chest, the five grains can be held. A long nasal passage reads the large intestine; thick lips and a long philtrum read the small intestine; large pouches below the eyes mean the gallbladder is broad; nostrils turned outward mean the bladder leaks; a raised bridge of the nose means the triple burner is bound. This is how the six receptacles are read. When upper, middle and lower are equal, the viscera are at peace and sound.

Textual notes

Readings follow the base edition; significant variants are recorded here.
