Huáng dì wèn yuē: wǔ zàng shǐ rén wěi, hé yě?
The Emperor asks: the five stores can bring flaccidity upon a person — how is that?

Qí bó duì yuē: fèi zhǔ shēn zhī pí máo, xīn zhǔ shēn zhī xuè mài, gān zhǔ shēn zhī jīn mó, pí zhǔ shēn zhī jī ròu, shèn zhǔ shēn zhī gǔ suǐ.
Qi Bo replies: the lung governs the skin and hair of the body, the heart governs the blood vessels, the liver governs the sinew membranes, the spleen governs the flesh, and the kidney governs the bones and marrow.
3
Gù fèi rè yè jiāo, zé pí máo xū ruò jí bó, zhuó zé shēng wěi bì yě.
So when the lung is hot and its lobes are scorched, the skin and hair become weak, tight and thin; when that lodges fast, flaccidity and the inability to walk develop.
4
Xīn qì rè, zé xià mài jué ér shàng, shàng zé xià mài xū, xū zé shēng mài wěi, shū zhé qiè, jìng zòng ér bù rèn dì yě.
When the heart qi is hot, the lower vessels surge upward; as it rises the lower vessels are emptied, and emptiness breeds vessel flaccidity — the pivot snaps and the leg cannot be lifted, the shank goes slack and will not bear the ground.
Gān qì rè, zé dǎn xiè kǒu kǔ, jīn mó gān, jīn mó gān zé jīn jí ér luán, fā wéi jīn wěi.
When the liver qi is hot, the gallbladder discharges and the mouth is bitter; the sinew membranes dry, and once they dry the sinews tighten and cramp — this becomes sinew flaccidity.
Pí qì rè, zé wèi gān ér kě, jī ròu bù rén, fā wéi ròu wěi.
When the spleen qi is hot, the stomach dries and there is thirst and the flesh is numb — this becomes flesh flaccidity.
7
Shèn qì rè, zé yāo jǐ bù jǔ, gǔ kū ér suǐ jiǎn, fā wéi gǔ wěi.
When the kidney qi is hot, the lower back and spine cannot straighten, the bones wither and the marrow diminishes — this becomes bone flaccidity.
8
Dì yuē: hé yǐ dé zhī?
The Emperor asks: how is it contracted?
9
Qí bó yuē: fèi zhě, zàng zhī zhǎng yě, wéi xīn zhī gài yě.
Qi Bo replies: the lung is the chief of the stores and the canopy over the heart.
10
Yǒu suǒ shī wáng, suǒ qiú bù dé, zé fā fèi míng, míng zé fèi rè yè jiāo.
When something is lost or some desire goes unmet, the lung rings; once it rings the lung is hot and its lobes are scorched.
11
Gù yuē: wǔ zàng yīn fèi rè yè jiāo, fā wéi wěi bì, cǐ zhī wèi yě.
Hence it is said: the five stores, through heat in the lung and scorching of its lobes, develop flaccidity and the inability to walk. This is what that means.
12
Bēi āi tài shèn, zé bāo luò jué, bāo luò jué zé yáng qì nèi dòng, fā zé xīn xià bēng, shuò sōu xuè yě.
Grief and sorrow carried too far sever the pericardium’s connecting vessel; once it is severed yang qi stirs within, and the attack brings a collapse below the heart and frequent bloody urine.
13
Gù běn bìng yuē: dà jīng kōng xū, fā wéi jī bì, chuán wéi mài wěi.
Thus the Benbing says: when the great conduits are empty, flesh obstruction develops and passes on into vessel flaccidity.
14
Sī xiǎng wú qióng, suǒ yuàn bù dé, yì yín yú wài, rù fáng tài shèn, zōng jīn chí zòng, fā wéi jīn wěi, jí wéi bái yín.
Thinking without end, desires unmet, the intent ranging outward and the chamber entered too often — the ancestral sinews slacken and go lax, and sinew flaccidity develops, or else white discharge.
Gù xià jīng yuē: jīn wěi zhě, shēng yú gān, shǐ nèi yě.
Thus the Lower Classic says: sinew flaccidity arises in the liver and comes of sexual excess.
16
Yǒu jiān yú shī, yǐ shuǐ wéi shì, ruò yǒu suǒ liú, jū chǔ xiāng shī, jī ròu rú zì, bì ér bù rén, fā wéi ròu wěi.
Steeped in dampness, working with water, with something lodging there and the dwelling damp — the flesh is soaked and steeped, obstructed and numb, and flesh flaccidity develops.
Gù xià jīng yuē: ròu wěi zhě, dé zhī shī dì yě.
Thus the Lower Classic says: flesh flaccidity is got from wet ground.
18
Yǒu suǒ yuǎn xíng láo juàn, féng dà rè ér kě, kě zé yáng qì nèi fá, nèi fá zé rè shè yú shèn.
Travelling far and toiling to exhaustion, meeting great heat and thirsting: with thirst yang qi is struck down within, and the heat lodges in the kidney.
19
Shèn zhě shuǐ zàng yě, jīn shuǐ bù shèng huǒ, zé gǔ kū ér suǐ xū, gù zú bù rèn shēn, fā wéi gǔ wěi.
The kidney is the water store; now that water cannot overcome fire, the bones wither and the marrow empties, so the feet cannot bear the body and bone flaccidity develops.
Gù xià jīng yuē: gǔ wěi zhě, shēng yú dà rè yě.
Thus the Lower Classic says: bone flaccidity arises from great heat.
21
Dì yuē: hé yǐ bié zhī?
The Emperor asks: how are they told apart?
22
Qí bó yuē: fèi rè zhě, sè bái ér máo bài; xīn rè zhě, sè chì ér luò mài yì; gān rè zhě, sè cāng ér zhǎo kū; pí rè zhě, sè huáng ér ròu rú dòng; shèn rè zhě, sè hēi ér chǐ gǎo.
Qi Bo replies: with lung heat the complexion is white and the hair spoils; with heart heat it is red and the connecting vessels overflow; with liver heat it is ash-grey and the nails wither; with spleen heat it is yellow and the flesh stirs and wriggles; with kidney heat it is black and the teeth are dry.
23
Dì yuē: rú fú zǐ yán kě yǐ, lùn yán zhì wěi zhě, dú qǔ yáng míng, hé yě?
The Emperor says: what you say is well enough. Yet the treatises say that in treating flaccidity one takes yang brightness alone — why is that?
Qí bó yuē: yáng míng zhě, wǔ zàng liù fǔ zhī hǎi, zhǔ rùn zōng jīn, zōng jīn zhǔ shù gǔ ér lì jī guān yě.
Qi Bo replies: yang brightness is the sea of the five stores and the six palaces; it moistens the ancestral sinews, and the ancestral sinews bind the bones and make the joints work freely.
Chōng mài zhě, jīng mài zhī hǎi yě, zhǔ shèn guàn xī gǔ, yǔ yáng míng hé yú zōng jīn.
The thoroughfare vessel is the sea of the conduit vessels; it percolates into and irrigates the ravines and valleys, and joins yang brightness at the ancestral sinews.
Yīn yáng zǒng zōng jīn zhī huì, huì yú qì jiē, ér yáng míng wéi zhī zhǎng, jiē shǔ yú dài mài, ér luò yú dū mài.
Yin and yang together are the meeting of the ancestral sinews; they meet at the qi street, and yang brightness is their chief. All belong to the belt vessel and connect to the governing vessel.
Gù yáng míng xū zé zōng jīn zòng, dài mài bù yǐn, gù zú wěi bù yòng yě.
So when yang brightness is empty the ancestral sinews go lax and the belt vessel does not draw them up — hence the legs are flaccid and unusable.
28
Dì yuē: zhì zhī nài hé?
The Emperor asks: how is it treated?
29
Qí bó yuē: gè bǔ qí xíng, ér tōng qí shù, tiáo qí xū shí, hé qí nì shùn, jīn mài gǔ ròu, gè yǐ qí shí shòu yuè, zé bìng yǐ yǐ.
Qi Bo replies: supplement the spring point of each and open its transport point, regulate its vacuity and repletion, harmonize its counterflow and compliance — sinews, vessels, bones and flesh each in the month that is proper to it — and the illness is done.

Dì yuē: shàn.
The Emperor says: good.
