下 xià, lower; 經 jīng, a classic, a warp — a book whose threads are meant to hold. The Suwen quotes a 下經 several times and a 上經 alongside it; neither survives. What survives is the line this chapter takes from it, which became one of the most repeated sentences in Chinese medicine: when the stomach is not harmonious, sleep is not settled.

In brief

A medical classic that no longer exists, quoted here for one sentence: when the stomach is not harmonious, sleep is not settled. The Suwen cites the Lower Classic several times, usually beside an Upper Classic; what is left of it is what other books chose to copy out, and this line was copied more than most.

How it has been translated

Every rendering below is a decision about which reader is being addressed. There is no neutral option.

Wiseman & Fengthe Lower ClassicThey keep 經 as classic, which is what a book called 經 claims to be.
Unschuldthe Classic of the Lower [tracts]Unschuld adds what he takes the upper/lower pair to refer to, and marks the guess with brackets.
This sitethe Lower ClassicWe keep the plain title and say in the note that the book is lost. What matters for this chapter is not which book it was but that the Suwen bothers to cite it — the reasoning is the chapter's own, and the citation is offered as corroboration.
