痿 wěi — the chapter's own title, and the word it never defines directly. What it does instead is give the mechanism: each of the five stores governs a tissue, heat in the store scorches that tissue, and the limb that depends on it loses its power without losing its feeling. A limb that has gone numb and useless is obstruction; a limb that has gone slack and useless is this.
Shuowen

In brief

The withering of a limb that keeps its feeling. Chapter 44 lays it out as a disease of heat in the stores: the lung scorches the skin and hair, the heart empties the lower vessels, the liver dries the sinew membranes, the spleen dries the flesh, the kidney empties the marrow — and in each case the tissue fails and the limb goes slack. The word is rendered flaccidity on this site, after the existing entry for 痿厥.

In a year of earth in surplus, rain and dampness spread and move and the water of the kidney receives evil. The people are ill with pain in the abdomen, clear counterflow and a mind that takes no pleasure, a heavy body and freting oppression; it answers above to Saturn. If it is severe, the flesh wastes, the feet are limp and cannot be drawn up, walking brings twitching, there is pain under the foot, rheum breaks out, the centre is full and eating diminishes, and the four limbs cannot be lifted. Change arises when it holds its place: the qi of storage lies hidden and the qi of transformation governs alone, springs gush and rivers overflow, dried-up marshes bring forth fish, wind and rain arrive in force, the earth crumbles and collapses, and scaled creatures are seen on land. The illness is fullness of the abdomen, sloppy diarrhoea and rumbling in the bowels; if it turns worse below and Taixi is cut off, there is death and no cure; it answers above to Jupiter.

In response to dampness the head feels bound round; if the damp heat is not driven off, the large sinews contract and shorten while the small sinews slacken and lengthen – shortening makes for contraction, and slackening makes for flaccidity. In response to qi there is swelling, the four limbs take it in turn, and the yang qi is then exhausted.
