Practicing Needling

Xíng zhēn

A short chapter on the six ways a patient may respond to the needle, and on what each response reveals about his constitution. The question is practical: the same technique produces different effects in different people. The answer is a spectrum of yang and yin. The doubly yang person is blazing and high, fast of speech, lifting his feet as he walks, and his spirit moves before the needle arrives. Add a measure of yin, and the spirit holds back, because yin and yang in him are hard to separate. Where yin and yang are harmonious the qi meets the needle at once; where yin is abundant and sunken the qi follows the needle out and travels alone; where yin predominates the qi is slow to come and repeated insertions are needed. The last exchange is a rebuke: reversal of qi and worsening under treatment are not the patient's constitution but the practitioner's fault.

Huáng Dì wèn yú Qí Bó yuē: yú wén jiǔ zhēn yú fū zǐ, ér xíng zhī yú bǎi xìng, bǎi xìng zhī xuè qì gè bù tóng xíng, huò shén dòng ér qì xiān zhēn xíng, huò qì yǔ zhēn xiāng féng, huò zhēn yǐ chū qì dú xíng, huò shuò cì nǎi zhī, huò fā zhēn ér qì nì, huò shuò cì bìng yì jù. fán cǐ liù zhě, gè bù tóng xíng, yuàn wén qí fāng.
The Yellow Emperor asked Qi Bo: I have heard the nine needles from you and put them into practice among the people. The blood and qi of the people are not of one form: in some the spirit stirs and the qi moves ahead of the needle; in some the qi meets the needle; in some the qi travels alone after the needle is out; in some several insertions are needed before there is any awareness; in some the qi reverses as the needle is withdrawn; and in some several insertions make the disease worse. These six are of different forms; I should like to hear the reasons.
Qí Bó yuē: chóng yáng zhī rén, qí shén yì dòng, qí qì yì wǎng yě.
Qi Bo said: In the doubly yang person the spirit is easily stirred and the qi easily goes.
Huáng Dì yuē: hé wèi chóng yáng zhī rén?
The Emperor said: What is a doubly yang person?
Qí Bó yuē: chóng yáng zhī rén, hè hè gāo gāo, yán yǔ shàn jí, jǔ zú shàn gāo, xīn fèi zhī cáng qì yǒu yú, yáng qì huá shèng ér yáng, gù shén dòng ér qì xiān xíng.
Qi Bo said: The doubly yang person is blazing and high; his speech is fast, he lifts his feet high, and the qi of the heart and lungs is in excess. His yang qi is slippery, abundant, and rising; therefore his spirit stirs and his qi goes first.
Huáng Dì yuē: chóng yáng zhī rén, ér shén bù xiān xíng zhě, hé yě?
The Emperor said: Why does the spirit of a doubly yang person sometimes not go first?
Qí Bó yuē: cǐ rén pō yǒu yīn zhě yě.
Qi Bo said: Such a person has a good deal of yin.
Huáng Dì yuē: hé yǐ zhī qí pō yǒu yīn yě?
The Emperor said: How does one know he has a good deal of yin?
Qí Bó yuē: duō yáng zhě duō xǐ, duō yīn zhě duō nù, shuò nù zhě yì jiě, gù yuē pō yǒu yīn. qí yīn yáng zhī lí hé nán, gù qí shén bù néng xiān xíng yě.
Qi Bo said: One of much yang is much given to joy; one of much yin is much given to anger. One who is often angry is easily released, and so I say he has a good deal of yin. In him yin and yang are hard to separate and join, and therefore the spirit cannot go first.
Huáng Dì yuē: qí qì yǔ zhēn xiāng féng, nài hé?
The Emperor said: What is it for the qi to meet the needle?
Qí Bó yuē: yīn yáng hé tiáo ér xuè qì nào zé huá lì, gù zhēn rù ér qì chū, jí ér xiāng féng yě.
Qi Bo said: Yin and yang are harmonious and the blood and qi are moist, glossy, slippery, and free; therefore when the needle enters the qi comes out, and they meet swiftly.
Huáng Dì yuē: zhēn yǐ chū ér qì dú xíng zhě, hé qì shǐ rán?
The Emperor said: When the qi travels alone after the needle is out, what qi brings that about?
Qí Bó yuē: qí yīn qì duō ér yáng qì shǎo, yīn qì chén ér yáng qì fú zhě nèi zàng, gù zhēn yǐ chū, qì nǎi suí qí hòu, gù dú xíng yě.
Qi Bo said: In such a person yin qi is abundant and yang qi scant; the yin is sunken and the yang floating, and both are stored within. Therefore when the needle is out the qi follows behind it, and so it travels alone.
Huáng Dì yuē: shuò cì nǎi zhī, hé qì shǐ rán?
The Emperor said: What qi is it that makes several insertions necessary before there is awareness?
Qí Bó yuē: cǐ rén zhī duō yīn ér shào yáng, qí qì chén ér qì wǎng nán, gù shuò cì nǎi zhī yě.
Qi Bo said: This person has much yin and little yang; his qi is sunken and goes with difficulty, and therefore several insertions are needed before there is awareness.
Huáng Dì yuē: zhēn rù ér qì nì zhě, hé qì shǐ rán?
The Emperor said: What qi is it that makes the qi reverse when the needle enters?
Qí Bó yuē: qí qì nì yǔ qí shuò cì bìng yì shèn zhě, fēi yīn yáng zhī qì, fú chén zhī shì yě. cǐ jiē cū zhī suǒ bài, shàng zhī suǒ shī, qí xíng qì wú guò yān.
Qi Bo said: The reversal of qi, and the worsening of the disease with repeated insertions, are not a matter of yin and yang qi or of floating and sinking tendency. These are all the failures of the coarse workman and the losses of the superior one; the form and qi of the patient are not at fault.

Textual notes

Readings follow the base edition; significant variants are recorded here.
