Huáng dì wèn yuē: rén zhī jū chǔ, dòng jìng, yǒng qiè, mài yì wèi zhī biàn hū?
The Emperor asks: Does a person’s dwelling, movement and stillness, courage and timidity, change the pulse as well?

Qí bó duì yuē: fán rén zhī jīng kǒng, huì láo, dòng jìng, jiē wéi biàn yě.
Qibo replies: In all persons, fright and fear, resentment and exertion, movement and stillness — all of these bring change.

Shì yǐ yè xíng zé chuǎn chū yú shèn, yín qì bìng fèi; yǒu suǒ duò kǒng, chuǎn chū yú gān, yín qì hài pí; yǒu suǒ jīng kǒng, chuǎn chū yú fèi, yín qì shāng xīn; dù shuǐ diē pū, chuǎn chū yú shèn yǔ gǔ.
Thus walking by night makes panting issue from the kidney, and its overflowing qi sickens the lung; where there has been a fall and fright, panting issues from the liver and the overflowing qi harms the spleen; where there has been terror, panting issues from the lung and the overflowing qi injures the heart; crossing water and stumbling makes panting issue from the kidney and the bone.

Dāng shì zhī shí, yǒng zhě qì xíng zé yǐ, qiè zhě zé zhuó ér wéi bìng yě.
At such a time, in the brave the qi moves on and there is an end of it; in the timid it lodges and becomes disease.
5
Gù yuē: zhěn bìng zhī dào, guān rén yǒng qiè, gǔ ròu pí fū, néng zhī qí qíng, yǐ wéi zhěn fǎ yě.
Hence it is said: the way of examining illness is to observe a person’s courage or timidity and the condition of bone, flesh and skin; to be able to know the condition of things is the method of diagnosis.

Gù yǐn shí bǎo shèn, hàn chū yú wèi. Jīng ér duó jīng, hàn chū yú xīn. Chí zhòng yuǎn xíng, hàn chū yú shèn. Jí zǒu kǒng jù, hàn chū yú gān. Yáo tǐ láo kǔ, hàn chū yú pí.
Thus when food and drink are taken to excess, the sweat comes from the stomach; when fright seizes the essence, the sweat comes from the heart; bearing a heavy load on a long road, the sweat comes from the kidney; running in fear, the sweat comes from the liver; toiling with the body in labour, the sweat comes from the spleen.

Gù chūn qiū dōng xià, sì shí yīn yáng, shēng bìng qǐ yú guò yòng, cǐ wéi cháng yě.
Thus in spring, autumn, winter and summer, with the yin and yang of the four seasons, the arising of illness comes from use beyond measure; this is the constant rule.
Shí qì rù wèi, sàn jīng yú gān, yín qì yú jīn.
Food qi enters the stomach and disperses essence to the liver, which soaks the sinews with its qi.
Shí qì rù wèi, zhuó qì guī xīn, yín jīng yú mài. Mài qì liú jīng, jīng qì guī yú fèi, fèi cháo bǎi mài, shū jīng yú pí máo.
Food qi enters the stomach; the turbid qi returns to the heart, which steeps essence into the vessels. Vessel qi flows through the channels, channel qi returns to the lung; the lung is courted by the hundred vessels and conveys essence to skin and hair.
Máo mài hé jīng, xíng qì yú fǔ. Fǔ jīng shén míng, liú yú sì zàng, qì guī yú quán héng. Quán héng yǐ píng, qì kǒu chéng cùn, yǐ jué sǐ shēng.
Hair and vessels unite their essence and move qi into the storehouse; the spirit brightness of the storehouse lodges in the four viscera, and the qi returns to the steelyard. When the steelyard is level, the qi mouth forms the inch, by which death and life are decided.

Yǐn rù yú wèi, yóu yì jīng qì, shàng shū yú pí. Pí qì sàn jīng, shàng guī yú fèi, tōng tiáo shuǐ dào, xià shū páng guāng. Shuǐ jīng sì bù, wǔ jīng bìng xíng, hé yú sì shí, wǔ zàng yīn yáng, kuí duó yǐ wéi cháng yě.
Drink enters the stomach, wanders and overflows as essence qi and is conveyed upward to the spleen. Spleen qi disperses essence, which returns upward to the lung; the lung regulates the waterways and sends it down to the bladder. The water essence spreads out in all directions, running level with the five channels, harmonising with the four seasons and the yin and yang of the five viscera — this measure is taken as the norm.

Tài yáng zàng dú zhì, jué chuǎn xū qì nì, shì yīn bù zú, yáng yǒu yú yě. Biǎo lǐ dāng jù xiè, qǔ zhī xià shù.
When the greater yang viscus arrives alone, there is counterflow panting and empty qi rebellious upward: yin is insufficient and yang in excess. Both the exterior and the interior should be drained; take the lower transport points.
13
Yáng míng zàng dú zhì, shì yáng qì chóng bìng yě. Dāng xiè yáng bǔ yīn, qǔ zhī xià shù.
When the yang brilliance viscus arrives alone, this is yang qi doubled upon itself. Drain the yang and supplement the yin; take the lower transport points.
Shào yáng zàng dú zhì, shì jué qì yě. Qiāo qián cù dà, qǔ zhī xià shù. Shào yáng dú zhì zhě, yī yáng zhī guò yě.
When the lesser yang viscus arrives alone, this is counterflow qi. If the region before the heel vessel swells suddenly, take the lower transport points. For the lesser yang arriving alone: it is the excess of the one yang.

Tài yīn zàng bó zhě, yòng xīn xǐng zhēn. Wǔ mài qì shǎo, wèi qì bù píng, sān yīn yě. Yí zhì qí xià shù, bǔ yáng xiè yīn.
Where the greater yin viscus beats hard: apply the mind and examine the true. The five vessels having scant qi and stomach qi being unlevelled is the three yin. Treat its lower transport points, supplementing yang and draining yin.
16
Yī yáng dú xiào, shào yáng jué yě. Yáng bìng yú shàng, sì mài zhēng zhāng, qì guī yú shèn. Yí zhì qí jīng luò, xiè yáng bǔ yīn.
The one yang whistling alone is lesser yang counterflow. Yang gathers above, the four vessels contend and stretch, and the qi returns to the kidney. Treat its channels and networks, draining yang and supplementing yin.
17
Yī yīn zhì, jué yīn zhī zhì yě. Zhēn xū yuān xīn, jué qì liú bó, fā wéi bái hàn, tiáo shí hé yào, zhì zài xià shù.
The one yin arriving is the governance of the reverting yin. With true emptiness the heart aches; counterflow qi lodges and presses, giving rise to white sweat. Regulate the food and harmonise the medicine; treat at the lower transport points.

Dì yuē: tài yáng zàng hé xiàng? Qí bó yuē: xiàng sān yáng ér fú yě.
The Emperor says: What picture does the greater yang viscus give? Qibo says: It images the three yang and is floating.
19
Dì yuē: shào yáng zàng hé xiàng? Qí bó yuē: xiàng yī yáng yě. Yī yáng zàng zhě, huá ér bù shí yě.
The Emperor says: What picture does the lesser yang viscus give? Qibo says: It images the one yang. The one yang viscus is slippery and not replete.
20
Dì yuē: yáng míng zàng hé xiàng? Qí bó yuē: xiàng dà fú yě. Tài yīn zàng bó, yán fú gǔ yě; èr yīn bó zhì, shèn chén bù fú yě.
The Emperor says: What picture does the yang brilliance viscus give? Qibo says: It images largeness and floating. That the greater yin viscus beats means hidden yet drumming; when the two yin arrive beating, the kidney pulse is sunken and not floating.
