天 tiān — heaven, the sky above (《說文》: 天,顛也:what is highest); 氣 qì — vapour, breath, the thing that moves (《說文》: 氣,雲氣也). 天氣 is the qi of heaven as distinguished from the qi of earth: in this chapter the two are the halves the seasons run on, and the cosmology paragraph says what heaven's half is — 清淨光明者也, pure, still, bright and luminous, and it stores its de · virtue away and never stops.

In brief

The qi of heaven, as opposed to the qi of earth. Suwen 2 uses the pair twice over: in autumn the qi of heaven is sharp and the qi of earth is clear; and in the cosmology paragraph it is heaven’s qi that is pure, still, bright and luminous and keeps its virtue stored away, with the consequence that when it fails, the white dew does not fall and the ten thousand things have nothing to be given from.

The qi of heaven is pure, still, bright and luminous. It stores its virtue away and never stops, and so it does not fall. If the sky becomes over-bright, then sun and moon lose their light, and evils harm the openings; the yang qi is stopped up and shut in, and the qi of earth throws a veil over the brightness.

The Yellow Emperor said: from of old, communicating with heaven is the root of life, and this root is itself rooted in yin and yang. Between heaven and earth, within the six directions, the qi of the nine regions, the nine orifices, the five viscera and the twelve joints all communicate with the qi of heaven. Its generating is five and its qi are three – the five phases and the three yin and three yang. To transgress this again and again is to let the evil qi wound the person; this is the root of the allotted span.
