The Yellow Emperor said: When a woman has no beard, is it that she has no blood and qi?

歧伯曰：衝脉、任脉，皆起於胞中，上循背裏，爲經絡之海。
歧伯曰：冲脉、任脉，皆起于胞中，上循背里，为经络之海。 Qí Bó yuē: chōng mài, rèn mài, jiē qǐ yú bāo zhōng, shàng xún bèi lǐ, wéi jīng luò zhī hǎi.
岐伯说：冲脉、任脉都起于胞中，上循背里，是经络之海。
Qi Bo said: The penetrating and conception vessels both rise in the womb, run up along the inside of the back, and form the sea of channels and networks.

其浮而外者，循腹右上行，會於咽喉，别而絡脣口。血氣盛，則充膚𤍠肉，血獨盛，則澹滲皮膚，生毫毛。

它浮行于外的，沿腹的右侧上行，会于咽喉，别行而络于唇口。血气盛就充肤热肉，血独盛就微微渗灌皮肤，生出毫毛。
The part that floats outward runs up the right side of the abdomen, meets at the throat, and branches to network the lips. When blood and qi are abundant it fills the skin and warms the flesh; when blood alone is abundant it seeps faintly through the skin and generates fine hair.

今婦人之生，有餘於氣，不足於血，以其數脱血也。衝任之脉，不榮口脣，故鬚不生焉。
今妇人之生，有余于气，不足于血，以其数脱血也。冲任之脉，不荣口唇，故须不生焉。 jīn fù rén zhī shēng, yǒu yú yú qì, bù zú yú xuè, yǐ qí shù tuō xuè yě. chōng rèn zhī mài, bù róng kǒu chún, gù xū bù shēng yān.
如今妇人之生，气有余而血不足，因为她屡次脱血。冲任之脉不荣口唇，所以不生胡须。
Now the woman is so constituted that she has excess qi and insufficient blood, because she repeatedly loses blood. The penetrating and conception vessels do not nourish the lips, and therefore no beard grows.

黃帝曰：士人有傷於陰，陰氣絶而不起，陰不用，然其鬚不去，其故何也？宦者獨去，何也？願聞其故。
黄帝曰：士人有伤于阴，阴气绝而不起，阴不用，然其须不去，其故何也？宦者独去，何也？愿闻其故。 Huáng Dì yuē: shì rén yǒu shāng yú yīn, yīn qì jué ér bù qǐ, yīn bù yòng, rán qí xū bù qù, qí gù hé yě? huàn zhě dú qù, hé yě? yuàn wén qí gù.
黄帝说：士人有伤于阴器，阴气绝而不起，阴器不用，然而胡须不去，是什么缘故？宦官独去，为什么？希望听其中的缘故。
The Emperor said: When a man is injured in the yin organ, so that the yin qi is cut off and no longer rises and the organ is useless, yet his beard does not go — why? And why does it go in the eunuch? I should like to hear the reason.

歧伯曰：宦者去其宗筋，傷其衝脉，血寫不復，皮膚内結，脣口不營，故鬚不生。
歧伯曰：宦者去其宗筋，伤其冲脉，血写不复，皮肤内结，唇口不营，故须不生。 Qí Bó yuē: huàn zhě qù qí zōng jīn, shāng qí chōng mài, xuè xiè bù fù, pí fū nèi jié, chún kǒu bù yíng, gù xū bù shēng.
岐伯说：宦官去掉宗筋，伤了冲脉，血泻不复，皮肤内结，唇口不营，所以不生胡须。
Qi Bo said: The eunuch has had the ancestral sinew removed, which injures the penetrating vessel; the blood is drained and does not return, the skin knots within, the lips are not nourished, and therefore no beard grows.

黃帝曰：其有天宦者，未嘗被傷，不脱於血，然其鬚不生，其故何也？
黄帝曰：其有天宦者，未尝被伤，不脱于血，然其须不生，其故何也？ Huáng Dì yuē: qí yǒu tiān huàn zhě, wèi cháng bèi shāng, bù tuō yú xuè, rán qí xū bù shēng, qí gù hé yě?
黄帝说：有所谓天宦的，未曾受伤，也不脱血，然而不生胡须，是什么缘故？
The Emperor said: There are those born eunuchs, never injured and not losing blood, yet they grow no beard. Why?

歧伯曰：此天之所不足也。其任衝不盛，宗筋不成，有氣無血，脣口不榮，故鬚不生。
歧伯曰：此天之所不足也。其任冲不盛，宗筋不成，有气无血，唇口不荣，故须不生。 Qí Bó yuē: cǐ tiān zhī suǒ bù zú yě. qí rèn chōng bù shèng, zōng jīn bù chéng, yǒu qì wú xuè, chún kǒu bù róng, gù xū bù shēng.
岐伯说：这是天所不足。他的任冲不盛，宗筋不成，有气无血，唇口不荣，所以不生胡须。
Qi Bo said: This is a deficiency from Heaven. Their conception and penetrating vessels are not abundant, the ancestral sinew does not complete, they have qi but no blood, the lips are not nourished, and therefore no beard grows.

黃帝曰：善乎哉！聖人之通萬物也，若日月之光影，音聲鼓響，聞其聲而知其形，其非夫子，孰能明萬物之精？
黄帝曰：善乎哉！圣人之通万物也，若日月之光影，音声鼓响，闻其声而知其形，其非夫子，孰能明万物之精？ Huáng Dì yuē: shàn hū zāi! shèng rén zhī tōng wàn wù yě, ruò rì yuè zhī guāng yǐng, yīn shēng gǔ xiǎng, wén qí shēng ér zhī qí xíng, qí fēi fū zǐ, shú néng míng wàn wù zhī jīng?
黄帝说：好啊！圣人通晓万物，像日月的光影、音声的鼓响，听到声音就知道它的形，若不是先生，谁能明白万物的精微？
The Emperor said: How excellent! The sage penetrates all things as the sun and moon cast light and shadow, as sound answers the drum. Hearing the sound, he knows the form. But for you, Master, who could make clear the essence of all things?
shì gù shèng rén shì qí yán sè, huáng chì zhě duō rè qì, qīng bái zhě shǎo rè qì, hēi sè zhě duō xuè shǎo qì. měi méi zhě tài yáng duō xuè, tōng rán jí xū zhě shào yáng duō xuè, měi xū zhě yáng míng duō xuè, cǐ qí shí rán yě.
所以圣人看人的颜色，黄赤的多热气，青白的少热气，黑色的多血少气。眉美的太阳多血，通髯极须的少阳多血，须美的阳明多血，这是应时的常然。
Therefore the sage looks at a person’s complexion: the yellow and red have much hot qi, the green and white little hot qi, the black much blood and little qi. Handsome eyebrows mean much blood in the taiyang; a beard running through to the fullest means much blood in the shaoyang; a handsome beard means much blood in the yangming. This is how it is in season.
fū rén zhī cháng shù, tài yáng cháng duō xuè shǎo qì, shào yáng cháng duō qì shǎo xuè, yáng míng cháng duō xuè duō qì, jué yīn cháng duō qì shǎo xuè, shào yīn cháng duō xuè shǎo qì, tài yīn cháng duō xuè shǎo qì, cǐ tiān zhī cháng shù yě.
人的常数，太阳常多血少气，少阳常多气少血，阳明常多血多气，厥阴常多气少血，少阴常多血少气，太阴常多血少气，这是天的常数。
As for the constant numbers of man: the taiyang is always much blood and little qi, the shaoyang always much qi and little blood, the yangming always much blood and much qi, the jueyin always much qi and little blood, the shaoyin always much blood and little qi, the taiyin always much blood and little qi. These are the constant numbers of Heaven.
