Yang at its brightest — the yang that has filled out.

In brief

The second of the three yang: it lies before greater yin, roots at Lidui on the second toe, and holds the office of the closed. Yang brightness is yang at its fullest, the point at which it turns back inward. The first chapter uses the same name as 陽明脈, the vessel whose decline at five sevens withers the face.

At fourteen the heavenly water arrives, the conception vessel opens, the great surge vessel is full, and the menses come down in season, so she can bear children. At twenty-one the kidney qi is even and balanced, so the wisdom teeth come and growth reaches its extreme. At twenty-eight the sinews and bones are firm, the hair has grown to its utmost, and the body is at its fullest strength. At thirty-five the yangming vessel declines, the face begins to sear and the hair begins to fall. At forty-two the three yang vessels decline in the upper part; the face is entirely seared and the hair begins to whiten. At forty-nine the conception vessel is empty, the great surge vessel is decayed and scant, the heavenly water is exhausted and the way of the earth is blocked, so the body is broken down and she can have no children.

When yang brightness governs the heaven the qi of dryness descends upon it and the qi of the liver follows upward; blue-green arises and wood comes into use and stands, and earth then suffers calamity; chill bleakness comes again and again, wood is felled and grass withers. Fierce heat arrives and earth turns to summer heat; the yang qi bursts forth pent up, the urine changes, cold and heat come like malaria, and in the extreme there is pain in the heart. All these, the governance of yang brightness governing the heaven: the qi transformation runs behind heaven. The qi of heaven is urgent, the qi of earth bright; yang has its command alone and scorching heat moves greatly; things are dry and so hard; simple wind governs; wind and dryness move crosswise and flow to the junction of qi; yang is much and yin little; clouds hasten to the rain storehouse; the damp transformation spreads; dryness at its extreme becomes moisture; its grain is the white and the cinnabar, and the intercalary grain is the one that is over; what it consumes is the white-shelled and the feathered; metal and fire join in virtue; above it answers to Venus and Mars. Its governance is pressing, its command violent; the hibernating creatures then appear and running water does not freeze. The people are ill with cough and blocked throat; cold and heat break out; there is sudden shivering, retention and stoppage. When the cool comes first and is hard, the hairy creatures die; when heat comes after and is violent, the shelled creatures are harmed.

Huang Di said: good. I wish to hear what is meant by the three of yin and yang. Qi Bo said: the qi has much and little, and their uses differ. Huang Di said: what is meant by yang brightness? Qi Bo said: two yangs joined make brightness. Huang Di said: what of ceasing yin? Qi Bo said: two yins crossing come to an end. Huang Di said: the qi has much and little, illness has abundance and decline, treatment has slowness and urgency, and formulas have great and small; I wish to hear the essentials of it. Qi Bo said: the qi has high and low, illness has far and near, the signs have inner and outer, and treatment has light and heavy, each suiting where it arrives. The Great Essentials says: one sovereign with two ministers is the rule of the odd; two sovereigns with four ministers is the rule of the even; two sovereigns with three ministers is the rule of the odd; two sovereigns with six ministers is the rule of the even.
