The lung is the root of qi and the abode of the corporeal soul. Its bloom is in the body hair, its filling is in the skin; it is the greater yin within yang, and it communicates with the qi of autumn.

The five flavours enter the mouth and are stored in the stomach, and thereby nourish the qi of the five storing organs. The qi mouth too is the greater yin; therefore the qi and flavour of the five storing organs and six palaces all come out of the stomach, and their changes appear at the qi mouth.

To practise the method of the anomalous, begin with the greater yin. To move into what does not conquer is called rebellion, and rebellion is death; to move into what one conquers is called compliance, and compliance means living. The conquests of the eight winds and the four seasons end and begin again; once the counter-movement has passed over, the count cannot be taken up again. The discourse on essentials is complete.

When the greater yin ends, the abdomen is distended and stopped up, breathing cannot be gotten, there is belching and vomiting; if he vomits the qi rebels and the face turns red; if it does not rebel, the upper and lower do not communicate; when they do not communicate the face turns black, the skin and hair wither, and it ends.

Qibo answers: the five viscera all receive their qi from the stomach; the stomach is the root of the five viscera. The qi of a viscus cannot reach the hand taiyin by itself — it must go by way of stomach qi before it arrives there. Thus each viscus, in its own season, reaches the hand taiyin by its own act. When evil qi prevails, the essential qi declines. In severe disease the stomach qi cannot travel with it to the hand taiyin, and so the qi of the true viscus appears alone. Appearing alone means the disease has overcome the viscus — hence death. “Good,” says the Emperor.

Gui Yu Qu said: in the years of zi and wu lesser yin is seen above; in the years of chou and wei greater yin is seen above; in the years of yin and shen lesser yang is seen above; in the years of mao and you yang brightness is seen above; in the years of chen and xu greater yang is seen above; in the years of si and hai ceasing yin is seen above.

Gui Yu Qu said: earth governs jia and ji, metal governs yi and geng, water governs bing and xin, wood governs ding and ren, fire governs wu and gui. Above zi and wu, lesser yin presides; above chou and wei, greater yin presides; above yin and shen, lesser yang presides; above mao and you, yang brightness presides; above chen and xu, greater yang presides; above si and hai, ceasing yin presides. These do not accord with yin and yang — why is that?

Above lesser yang, fire qi governs, and in the middle one sees ceasing yin. Above yang brightness, dryness qi governs, and in the middle one sees greater yin. Above greater yang, cold qi governs, and in the middle one sees lesser yin. Above ceasing yin, wind qi governs, and in the middle one sees lesser yang. Above lesser yin, heat qi governs, and in the middle one sees greater yang. Above greater yin, damp qi governs, and in the middle one sees yang brightness. This is what is called the root. Below the root is what is seen in the middle; below what is seen is the tip of the qi. Root and tip are not the same, and the images the qi answers with are different.

The qi of storage does not govern and the qi of the kidney is not balanced; it answers above to Mercury, and its grain is black millet. If greater yin presides above, great cold rises repeatedly, the hibernating creatures hide early, hard ice gathers on the ground, and the light of the sun does not govern.

Going against the qi of spring, Shaoyang · lesser yang does not give life, and the liver qi changes inwardly. Going against the qi of summer, Taiyang · greater yang does not grow, and the heart qi is hollow within. Going against the qi of autumn, Taiyin · greater yin does not gather in, and the lung qi is scorched and full. Going against the qi of winter, Shaoyin · lesser yin does not store, and the kidney qi sinks alone.

When greater yin governs the heaven the qi of dampness descends upon it and the qi of the kidney follows upward; black arises and water is changed; dust rises and cloud and rain come; there is discomfort in the chest and flaccidity of the yin organ; the qi greatly declines and cannot rise or be used; at that time there is rather pain in the loins and rump and difficulty in turning; there is counterflow. Earth then stores yin, great cold is at hand, burrowing insects take cover early, there is stuffiness and pain below the heart, the ground cracks and the ice is hard, the lower abdomen hurts, and eating is now and again spoiled. Where water rides upon metal the still water increases, the taste turns salty, and moving water is reduced.
