Qibo replies: In the first and second months the heavenly qi begins to spread squarely and the earthly qi begins to issue forth, and the human qi is in the liver. In the third and fourth months the heavenly qi is squarely in place and the earthly qi issues in earnest, and the human qi is in the spleen. In the fifth and sixth months the heavenly qi is at its height and the earthly qi is high, and the human qi is in the head. In the seventh and eighth months the yin qi begins to kill, and the human qi is in the lung. In the ninth and tenth months the yin qi begins to freeze and the earthly qi begins to close, and the human qi is in the heart. In the eleventh and twelfth months the ice thickens and the earthly qi closes up, and the human qi is in the kidney.

Therefore in spring needle the scattered transport points and the partings of the flesh, and stop when blood comes; where the illness is severe, let the qi be transmitted, where it is light, one circuit suffices. In summer needle the transport points of the network vessels, stop when blood is seen, close the circuit once the qi is spent, and the painful illness will surely descend. In autumn needle the skin, following the partings, the same method above and below, and stop when the spirit changes. In winter needle the orifices of the transport points at the partings: where severe, go straight down; where light, scatter the insertion downward.

Whenever one needles the chest or abdomen, one must avoid the five depots. Striking the heart means death within one circuit. Striking the spleen means death in five days. Striking the kidney means death in seven days. Striking the lung means death in five days. Striking the diaphragm is always a wound to the interior: even if the illness appears to mend, the person will certainly die within a year.

cì bì wǔ zàng zhě, zhī nì cóng yě. suǒ wèi cóng zhě, gé yǔ pí shèn zhī chù, bù zhī zhě, fǎn zhī.
Needling so as to avoid the five depots is knowing rebellion and compliance. What is called compliance is the place of the diaphragm and of the spleen and kidney; one who does not know it does the opposite.

To needle the chest and abdomen, first bind the place with cloth, then needle through the single layer of cloth; if it does not mend, needle again. In needling, the needle must be reverent: when needling a swelling, shake the needle; when needling the channels, do not shake it. This is the way of needling.
