六府
Literal
六 six; 府 palace, storehouse, the place where things are kept and business done. In this chapter the word is defined by behaviour rather than by list: whatever transmits and transforms and does not store belongs here.
Shuowen

In brief

The chapter names five of them — stomach, large intestine, small intestine, triple burner, bladder — and then speaks of six. The sixth has to be the gallbladder, which is the reason the gallbladder is also listed among the six extraordinary constant palaces: it is counted twice, once by shape and once by behaviour. Their rule is the opposite of the organs’ — they can be filled but never full.

Senses in the classical corpus

Five named here, six counted
2
Born of heaven, imaging heaven
What heaven means here is that it does not stop
3
Filled, never full
A load in transit gives fullness, not fullness that lasts
Suwen 11
4

What are called the five storing organs store essential qi and do not discharge it; therefore they may be full, but they cannot be filled. The six palaces transmit and transform things and do not store; therefore they may be filled, but they cannot be full.
