For yin needling, one needle goes in at the centre and four enter about it; this treats cold and heat. Where it is deep and drives inward on one spot, needle the great depots. To come close to the depots one needles the back, for the back carries the depot transport points. That one comes close to the depots by needling there is because these are where the depot qi gathers; stop when the cold and heat within the abdomen are gone.

Meeting dew and wind brings cold and heat. Thus one wounded by wind in spring lets the evil qi linger on, and in summer there is pouring diarrhoea; wounded by summer heat, in autumn there is jie malaria; wounded by dampness in autumn, the qi counterflows upward and there is coughing, and flaccidity and inversion develop; wounded by cold in winter, in spring there is sure to be warm disease. This is how the qi of the four seasons injure the five viscera in turn.

The Emperor says: What does it mean that an illness, once formed, changes? Qibo says: Wind, once formed, becomes cold and heat; heat, once formed, becomes wasting in the centre; counterflow, once formed, becomes disease of the crown; long-standing wind becomes food-diarrhoea; wind in the vessels becomes pestilent sores. The transformations of illness cannot be counted.

Left untreated, the kidney transmits it to the heart; the sinews and vessels pull against one another and tighten. It is called tetany; at that point one may cauter and may give medicine. Left untreated, at the full ten days death is due by rule. The kidney thus transmits to the heart, and the heart turns back and transmits to the lung, with cold and heat developing — by rule death is due in three years. Such is the order of the disease.
