土 is earth — soil, ground, the thing that grows things — and in chapter 29 it is the phase the spleen belongs to. The chapter does not simply assert the correspondence; it asks what follows from it, and what follows is the whole doctrine of the centre. Earth is what grows the ten thousand things, and because it grows everything it cannot be confined to one quarter of the year. So the spleen, being earth, rules the centre and is present in all four seasons rather than owning one. The chapter's argument runs entirely on the logic of the phase, which is what makes it worth reading as reasoning rather than as a table of correspondences.

In brief

Earth, the phase to which the spleen belongs, and in chapter 29 the premise of an argument rather than a mere correspondence. The chapter’s reasoning runs: the spleen is earth; earth rules the centre; earth grows the ten thousand things and takes heaven and earth as its law; therefore the spleen reaches from the head to the feet and can no more be confined to one season than earth can be confined to one quarter. Everything the chapter concludes about the spleen — that it rules no season, that it is delegated eighteen days in each, that it is what carries the stomach’s fluids outward — follows from this.

Qibo says: the spleen is earth. It rules the centre, and constantly, through the four seasons, it grows the four depots — governing by delegation for eighteen days in each. It cannot govern a season by itself. The spleen depot is that which constantly bears the essence of the earth of the stomach. Earth gives birth to the ten thousand things and takes heaven and earth as its law; therefore it reaches above to the head and below to the feet, and cannot govern a season.

Qi Bo said: when earth is pent and breaks out, the cliffs and valleys are shaken and alarmed; thunder rumbles at the junction of qi; dust darkens yellow and black and is transformed into white qi; it gusts high and deep; it strikes stones and hurls them into the air; great water follows; the streams run over and spread; fields and pasture become earth in the shape of colts; the transforming qi then spreads and well serves as seasonal rain; things begin to grow, begin to ripen, begin to transform, begin to be complete. Therefore the people are ill with distension of heart and belly and rumbling of the intestines, with frequent stool, and in severe cases heart pain and distension at the ribs, vomiting and cholera, rheumy outbreaks and running flux below, swollen feet and heaviness of body. Clouds run to the rain storehouse, sunset clouds crowd about the morning sun, and the dust of hills and marshes darkens — this is when it breaks out, in the fourth qi. Clouds lie across the mountains of heaven, floating and now living now dying — the foretoken of what is pent.

Qi Bo said: take it as it arrives. When cool qi comes in force it is the prevalence of dryness; wind and wood receive the evil, and liver illness arises. When hot qi comes in force it is the prevalence of fire; metal and dryness receive the evil, and lung illness arises. When cold qi comes in force it is the prevalence of water; fire and heat receive the evil, and heart illness arises. Taking advantage of the emptiness of the year, the evil is severe; losing the harmony of the season, the evil is severe too; meeting the emptiness of the moon, the evil is severe as well. If the evil is caught twice over, the illness is dangerous. Where there is a prevailing qi, revenge will surely come.

How it has been translated

Every rendering below is a decision about which reader is being addressed. There is no neutral option.

Wiseman & FengearthThey render 土 as earth in phase contexts, distinguishing it from 地, which is the ground one stands on.
UnschuldsoilUnschuld sometimes prefers soil for 土, which keeps the concrete image but reads oddly when the text is talking about a phase.
