Thus when the neck pulse is once as full again, the disease is in the lesser yang; twice, in the greater yang; three times, in the yang brightness; four times and more, it is called yang that shuts out.

A neck pulse that is mobile, with panting, hasty breathing and coughing, indicates water. A slight swelling within the eyelids, shaped like a sleeping silkworm rising, indicates water.

At the man’s greeting, a onefold surfeit is the lesser yang, twofold the greater yang, threefold the yang brightness — and then it enters the yin.

The Emperor asks: when a person has an abscess of the gastric duct, how should one examine him? Qi Bo answers: to examine this one should read the stomach conduit. The conduit should be sunken and fine; sunken and fine means the qi is counterflowing, and where qi counterflows the ren ying pulse is exceedingly full. Exceedingly full is heat.
