風 fēng, wind; 府 fǔ, a palace, a storehouse, or in the body's vocabulary a palace where something is gathered. The name means the place where wind gathers, and chapter 31 uses it for a single anatomical reason: the 巨陽 vessel connects there, and that is why 巨陽 governs the qi of all the yang. The name and the function are the same claim.

In brief

The point at the back of the neck where the 巨陽 vessel connects, named as the place where wind gathers. Chapter 31 mentions it once and for one reason: because 巨陽 connects there, and wind is the meeting place of the yang, 巨陽 governs the qi of all the yang. The whole six-channel progression follows from that — the vessel that governs the yang is the one the disease must enter first. The point is also the anatomical reason for the first day’s symptom list, pain in the head and nape with stiffness in the lumbar spine.

Qi Bo says: the evil qi lodges at the wind palace and travels down along the spine. The defensive qi holds its great assembly at the wind palace once in a day and a night, and on the following day descends one joint. So the fit comes later — this is because the evil first lodged in the spine and back.

How it has been translated

Every rendering below is a decision about which reader is being addressed. There is no neutral option.

Wiseman & Fengwind palaceThey keep 府 as palace throughout the point names, so that the nomenclature is consistent and the name stays a name.
Unschuldwind palaceUnschuld also keeps 'palace', and glosses the anatomical location rather than translating the components.
This sitewind palaceWe keep 府 as palace. Nothing in chapter 31's use of the point depends on translating it; what matters is that the vessel connects there, and the text says that in so many words.
