A Discourse on Wind

風論

Fēng lùn

Chapter 42 is the Suwen's discourse on wind, and it is where the book gives the epithet that later medicine never let go of: 風者,百病之長也 — wind is the chief of the hundred diseases. Wind moves and changes, and the same wind becomes cold and heat, heat in the interior, cold in the interior, li wind, or withering on one side, depending on where it lodges and on the body it finds. The chapter's first half classifies: by the conduit entered (yang brightness, greater yang), by the season and its heavenly stem (jia-yi gives liver wind, bing-ding heart wind, and so on), and by the manner of contracting it — drinking, the bedchamber, washing the hair, wind that has lingered. The second half gives the signs of each: lung wind is pale and worse at evening, heart wind scorches the lips, liver wind brings grief and a blue-green cast, spleen wind is yellow and slack, kidney wind is sooty and swells the face, stomach wind thins the body and fills the belly. Each is read off a place on the face — above the eyebrows, at the mouth, below the eye, on the nose — and each has its colour.

The Emperor asks: when wind harms a person, it may take the form of cold and heat, of heat in the interior, of cold in the interior, of li wind, of withering on one side, or simply of wind. The disorders differ and the names differ; in some cases the wind reaches inward to the five stores and the six palaces. I do not understand how this works, and I wish to hear your account of it.
Qí bó duì yuē: fēng qì cáng yú pí fū zhī jiān, nèi bù dé tōng, wài bù dé xiè.
Qi Bo answers: wind qi lodges between the skin and the flesh; it cannot pass inward and cannot drain outward.
Fēng zhě shàn xíng ér shuò biàn, còu lǐ kāi zé xiǎn rán hán, bì zé rè ér mèn.
Wind moves readily and changes often. When the interstices open there is a sudden chill; when they close there is heat and oppression.

The cold in it makes food and drink fall off; the heat in it wastes the flesh. So the patient is seized with a sudden shivering and cannot eat. This is called cold and heat.

When wind qi enters the stomach together with yang brightness and follows the vessel upward to the inner canthus: if the person is fat, the wind qi cannot drain outward and there is heat in the interior with yellowing of the eyes; if the person is thin, it drains outward and there is cold, and so cold in the interior with tears.

When wind qi enters together with greater yang, it travels the transports of the vessels and spreads through the partings of the flesh, where it clashes with the defensive qi. The passage is no longer free, and so the flesh swells and bulges and sores appear.

Wèi qì yǒu suǒ níng ér bù xíng, gù qí ròu yǒu bù rén yě.
