In brief

The fifth season, inserted so that the five phases can have five of them: It is the last month of summer, the month of earth, and the season to which the group of spleen, stomach and the rest answers (通於土氣) in the 藏象 list that follows. Read zhǎng — that in which things are brought to fullness — though a minority reading takes it as cháng, the long summer.

In late summer, a pulse with stomach qi and a slight soft weakness is called balanced; if the weakness is much and the stomach qi little, it is spleen disease; if there is only the intermittent pulse and no stomach qi, it is death; if the soft weakness carries stone in it, disease is foretold for winter; if the weakness is pronounced, the disease is present now. The true qi of the depots moistens the spleen; the spleen stores the qi of the flesh.

Common Englishlate summer / long summerBoth current, and each takes one of the two readings of 長.
This sitelate summer長 is read zhǎng, to bring to fullness, which is the reading the medical tradition has settled on. Late summer gets the season right while losing the growing, so the gloss carries both and notes the minority reading.
