The Natural Life Span

天年

Tiān nián

This is the chapter of the hundred years. It begins with a question about origins — what is the foundation, what the shield — and answers with the parents: the mother's blood for the base, the father's qi for the guard, and the spirit as the thing whose presence or absence decides life. From there it describes the fully formed person and then the long decline, decade by decade: running at ten, walking briskly at twenty, strolling at thirty, sitting at forty; at fifty the liver fails and the eyes dim; at sixty the heart fails and grief comes; at seventy the skin dries; at eighty the corporeal soul drifts and speech errs; at ninety the kidneys are scorched; at a hundred the spirit departs and the frame is left alone. The decades are not merely a list of decays. Each age names the viscus that governs it and the faculty that goes with it, so the sequence reads as one movement from outward action to inward quiet: run, walk, stroll, sit, lie down. What fails first is what was most used; what is left at the end is the frame. The last paragraph explains the short life by contrast: a shallow passage, a low wall, thin vessels, scanty blood, flesh that is not firm, and repeated injury by wind and cold. The span, in this account, is not fate but architecture.

The Yellow Emperor asked Qi Bo: I should like to hear what qi builds the foundation at the beginning of a human life, what is set up as its shield, what lost brings death, and what kept brings life.
Qí Bó yuē: yǐ mǔ wéi jī, yǐ fù wéi dùn, shī shén zhě sǐ, dé shén zhě shēng yě.
Qi Bo said: The mother is the foundation, the father the shield. Lose the spirit and you die; keep the spirit and you live.
Huáng Dì yuē: hé zhě wéi shén? Qí Bó yuē: xuè qì yǐ hé, róng wèi yǐ tōng, wǔ zàng yǐ chéng, shén qì shè xīn, hún pò bì jù, nǎi chéng wéi rén.
The Emperor said: What is the spirit? Qi Bo said: When blood and qi are already harmonious, when the nutritive and guarding qi already run freely, when the five viscera are already formed, when the spirit qi dwells in the heart and both souls are complete — then a human being is made.

Qi Bo said: When the five viscera are firm, the blood vessels harmonious, the flesh supple and free, the skin dense, the course of nutritive and guarding qi never losing its norm, the breathing fine and slow, the qi moving by measure, the six palaces transforming grain, and the fluids spread and diffused each as usual — then one can last long.

The Emperor said: How does one reach a hundred years and then die? Qi Bo said: The passage is deep and long, the foundation and wall high and square, the nutritive and guarding qi freely regulated, the three regions and three miles raised, the bones high and the flesh full — then a hundred years is reached before the end.

Qi Bo said: Their five viscera are all un-firm, the passage is not long, the orifices stand open, the breathing is violent and quick, the foundation and wall are low, the vessels thin and the blood scanty, the flesh not firm. Repeatedly struck by wind and cold, with blood and qi vacuous and the vessels obstructed, true and evil qi attack one another, disorder draws disorder on, and so they end in middle life.

Textual notes

Readings follow the base edition; significant variants are recorded here.
