Gǔ dù
This is the shortest chapter in the Lingshu and one of the most quoted, because it is the only place in the canon where the proportions of the human body are set out as a table. It answers a question that the Mai Du had left open: if the channels have fixed lengths, what fixes them? The answer is bone. Measure the joints and the channel measure follows. The method is stated in a single line and then applied. A man of seven chi five cun is taken as the standard, and the chapter measures him from the crown to the sole: the circumference of the head, chest and waist; the length from the hairline to the nape and from the hair to the chin; the distances from the Adam's apple to the supraclavicular fossa, from there to the sword bone, to the navel, to the pubic bone; the segments of the leg from the inner shin bone to the ankle and from the instep to the ground; the spans from the corner of the forehead to the collar bone, from the axilla to the lateral ribs, from the hip joint to the knee and to the outer ankle. Breadths follow lengths: between the cheekbones, the nipples, the hips. What makes the chapter more than a list is its use of excess and deficiency. Almost every vertical measurement is followed by a consequence — beyond nine cun the lung is large, short of it the lung is small; beyond eight cun the stomach is large; beyond six and a half the intestine is wide and long. The skeleton, in other words, is a diagnostic surface: the length of a segment tells you the size of the organ beneath it. The chapter closes by turning the same eye on the channels themselves, where floating and hard means much blood and fine and deep means much qi.
Readings follow the base edition; significant variants are recorded here.
