經 jīng — the warp, the thread that runs lengthwise and that everything else is measured against; in the body, the channel. 隧 suì — a hidden way, a passage cut through, the road a thing travels without being seen. 王冰 glosses it in one word: 隧,潛道也, a submerged course. Put the two together and the word is not the channel and not the network vessel but the course the channel runs in — the duct rather than the vessel, the road rather than the traffic. That distinction is what this chapter is built on. It says first what the tunnels are for: 五藏之道,皆出於經隧,以行血氣, the ways of the five viscera all come out by the channel tunnels and it is through them that blood and qi travel. It says next what follows if they are not kept: 血氣不和,百病乃變化而生,是故守經隧焉 — guard the tunnels. And when it comes to say what the needle is to do about qi, the tunnels are the thing it writes the instruction on: 氣有餘則冩其經隧,無傷其經,無出其血,無泄其氣。不足則𥙷其經隧,無出其氣. The method closes on them too: 刺此者,取之經隧,取血於營,取氣於衛. Five occurrences, and the chapter has no word it trusts more.

In brief

The channel tunnels — 經 jīng, the warp; 隧 suì, a hidden course, which 王冰 glosses 隧,潛道也 — and the word is the road a channel runs in rather than the channel itself. This chapter uses it five times and leans on every one. It says what they are for: 五藏之道,皆出於經隧,以行血氣. It says what follows if they are not kept: 血氣不和,百病乃變化而生,是故守經隧焉 — guard the tunnels, which is the sentence the chapter’s whole counsel hangs on. It writes the treatment of qi on them: 氣有餘則冩其經隧… And it closes its account of method with them: 刺此者,取之經隧,取血於營,取氣於衛. The word is not the same as 脈 or 絡, and the chapter keeps the three apart: the network vessel is where blood is drawn from, the channel is what must not be struck, and the tunnel is the course that is guarded and drawn on. It has not appeared in any chapter transcribed on this site before.

How it has been translated

Every rendering below is a decision about which reader is being addressed. There is no neutral option.

This sitechannel tunnelsliteral from the graphs — 經 the warp, 隧 a hidden course — and kept distinct from 脈 and 絡 because this chapter distinguishes them: it draws blood from the network, refuses to strike the channel, and guards and draws on the tunnel
Wang Bingthe submerged ways · 潛道王冰's 隧,潛道也, which is the only gloss the word gets in the received commentary and the one every later reading follows; exact, though it loses the warp in the first graph
Modernjing sui · the channel pathwayshow the word is usually left in English writing on the Suwen, transliterated because the distinction between a vessel and the course it runs in does not survive translation; faithful, and it asks the reader to learn the word rather than the image
