yī xī
Also rendered: Yixi (this site; the name kept in pinyin, since the point is named for a sound) · Yixi · BL 45 (the name and number later practice settled on)

At a glance
A point on the back, three inches to the side of the spine below the shoulders, and the only point in this book named for a sound. Chapter 60 does not describe it; it tells you how to find it — 厭之,令病者呼譩譆,譩譆應手, press and have the patient call out, and where the cry comes out from under the hand, that is the place. Two uses are given: 大風汗出,灸譩譆, burnt when great wind brings sweating, which stands opposite the needling of 風府 for 大風頸項痛 in the line above; and 䏚絡季脅,引少腹而痛脹,刺譩譆, needled when the flank vessel pulls the lower belly into painful swelling. Later practice writes the same point 譩譆 and numbers it the forty-fifth of the bladder channel; the chapter gives no number, only the place and the two occasions for using it. The name is read yī xī after the 廣韻 (於其切, 許其切); the 2004 standard reads yì xī, and both are recorded. 譩 and 譆 occur five times each in this chapter and nowhere else among the chapters transcribed on the site so far.
Passages where the term does real work, with the original, pinyin and English on the same line.
Every rendering below is a decision about which reader is being addressed. There is no neutral option.
| This site | Yixi | kept in pinyin because translation is not available: the word is a cry, and the chapter's method for finding the point is to make the patient utter it |
| Anatomical | three inches lateral to the spine, below the shoulder | the chapter's own 在背下俠脊傍三寸所; later lists put it level with the sixth thoracic vertebra |
| Acupuncture | Yixi · BL 45 | the point later practice numbered there; the chapter gives the place and the two occasions for using it, and no number at all |
