Pinyin
wáng yáng
Simplified
Literal
亡 wáng is to flee, to be lost; 陽 yáng is the active, warming, outward qi. The pair does not mean that yang has been destroyed but that it is leaving — fleeing through the skin as sweat, driven out by fire, or slipping away with a pulse that no longer holds it. It is an event in time, which is why the chapter warns against the sweat and the fire that cause it.
Shuowen

In brief

The loss of yang, understood as flight rather than extinction. The chapter shows three ways it happens. A tight pulse in both yin and yang that nonetheless produces spontaneous sweat means the yang is leaking through the surface; the same passage says a sore throat and vomiting will follow. A faint pulse in lesser yin forbids sweating altogether, because the sweat would carry away the little yang that remains. And a floating pulse treated with fire to force a sweat drives the yang out violently, so the spirit loses its hold and the patient becomes frightened, restless and wild. In each case the treatment is to hold and warm, never to disperse.

Senses in the classical corpus

1
The pulse is tight in both yin and yang yet sweat comes unbidden: the yang is leaking outward. This belongs to lesser yin, and a sore throat with vomiting and diarrhoea should be expected.
In lesser yin with a faint pulse the yang is already deficient; to sweat it further would let the yang leave with the sweat. If the cubit pulse is weak and rough, purging is forbidden as well.
Fire was used to force a sweat and the yang fled outward; the spirit loses its hold, so the patient is frightened and wild, unable to lie still.
