suān
Also rendered: Sour (the modern simplified graph 酸; the base text writes 痠; the two were merged by simplification) · Aching (translations that use one English word for 痛 and 痠; loses the distinction between sharp pain and sore aching)

At a glance
A sore, aching pain — the sickness-radical 痠, which the base text keeps distinct from 酸, sour. The chapter uses it only of the shank: once for the ache that precedes a fit and so tells the physician where to needle first, and once for the ache of the marrow-adhering disease, which is so severe the leg cannot be touched.
Passages where the term does real work, with the original, pinyin and English on the same line.
Every rendering below is a decision about which reader is being addressed. There is no neutral option.
