At a glance
The office of the spleen and stomach together, and the reason the list is twelve rather than eleven: 脾胃 are named as one office while counted as two organs. What issues from them is 五味, the five flavours — the whole business of taking food in and turning it into what the body can use. 倉 stores and 廩 issues; both halves are needed, which is why one office carries two organs.
Passages where the term does real work, with the original, pinyin and English on the same line.
Every rendering below is a decision about which reader is being addressed. There is no neutral option.
| Common English | office of the granary / the storehouse | Both current, and granary is the one that carries 倉. |
| This site | office of the granary | 廩 is the half that issues as well as keeps, and English granary does not say so; the gloss supplies it, and supplies the reason two organs share the post. |
