Shaoyang Disease

Biàn shào yáng bìng mài zhèng bìng zhì dì jiǔ

The shaoyang chapter, ten passages only, and the shortest of the six.It is a chapter of boundaries. It opens with the one line that fixes the channel: the disease of shaoyang is a bitter mouth, a dry throat, and dimness of the eyes. Then come the two prohibitions that govern everything after — no vomiting and no purging where the ears are deaf and the chest full, and no sweating where the pulse is string-like and fine, since sweat dries the stomach and the wood of shaoyang turns against it, bringing delirious speech. The middle of the chapter gives the one formula: hardness below the ribs, dry vomiting, inability to eat, alternating cold and heat, and a deep, tense pulse, answered by Minor Bupleurum. What follows is the spoiled disease — the case that has already been vomited, purged, sweated and needled, where the Bupleurum signs have gone and one must ask which wrong treatment was committed. The chapter closes on three signs of return: the three yang exhausted and the three yin refusing the evil, the sleep with sweat when the eyes close, and the small pulse on the third day. Cheng Wuyi's commentary is quoted selectively, marked 成注(節).

When the stomach is harmonised the patient recovers; when it is not, there is irritation with palpitation.

Textual notes

Readings follow the base edition; significant variants are recorded here.
