五氣 简体 五气

wǔ qì

Five qi · wu qi

Also rendered: The five qi (this site; qi is left untranslated throughout, because every English substitute implies a physics the texts never assume) · The five influences (how the phrase sometimes appears; wrong about 氣, which is activity, not influence)

五气
Literal
五 wǔ — five; 氣 qì — vapour, breath, and in these texts the activity of a thing rather than the thing itself. 五氣更立,各有所先: the five qi stand in turn and each takes its precedence. The chapter's earlier use is narrower (正五氣之各主歲爾, each of the five qi governing a year); its last use is the general one, and it carries the chapter's closing rule — out of place it is evil, in its proper place it is correct.

In brief

The five qi — the five as they govern the year, and in the chapter’s closing line the five as they take their turn. The rule the chapter ends on is the plainest thing in it: 五氣更立,各有所先,非其位則邪,當其位則正. Out of its place a qi is evil; in its proper place it is correct. The same rule has already been given for the pulse (不當其位者病,迭移其位者病,失守其位者危) and for the five directions, where each qi is told what it generates, what it harms and what overcomes that harm.

The north generates cold, cold generates water, water generates saltiness, saltiness generates the kidney, the kidney generates bone and marrow, and marrow generates the liver. In heaven it is cold, in earth water, in the body bone, in qi hardness, and among the viscera the kidney. Its nature is severe cold, its virtue cold, its action (the text is wanting here), its colour black, its transformation austerity, its creature the scaled, its governance stillness, its command (the text is wanting here), its change freezing and biting, its calamity hail, its flavour saltiness, and its emotion fear. Fear harms the kidney and thought overcomes fear; cold harms the blood and dryness overcomes cold; saltiness harms the blood and sweet overcomes saltiness. The five qi stand in turn and each takes its precedence; out of its place it is evil, in its proper place it is correct.

Huang Di said: what you have said, master, of the changes of the five qi and the answering of the four seasons may be called complete. But the stirring and disorder of the qi arises where it touches and meets; its outbreak has no constant occasion, and of a sudden disaster joins it — how is one to anticipate it?

What is rooted without is also five; hence the distinctions of engendering and transforming are the five qi, the five flavours, the five colours, the five classes and the five suitabilities. Huang Di said: what does that mean? Qi Bo said: what is rooted within is named the spirit mechanism — when the spirit goes the mechanism ceases. What is rooted without is named the standing of qi — when the qi stops transformation is cut off. Therefore each has its constraint, each its prevailing, each its engendering, each its completion.

Every rendering below is a decision about which reader is being addressed. There is no neutral option.

This sitethe five qiqi left untranslated, as everywhere on this site; the chapter's own rule for the five is about place, and it holds whether they are read as circuits, as phases or as weather
Enumeratingcold, summer heat, dryness, dampness, wind, firewhat they are when the chapter counts them; note that the chapter's opening question names six
Descriptivethe five seasonal qifaithful, and it reads like a gloss rather than a name
