大風 简体 大风

dà fēng

Great wind · da feng

Also rendered: Great wind (this site; the name the chapter gives it, kept as a name and not resolved into a modern diagnosis) · Leprosy; 麻风 (what later medicine and modern editions generally take it for; closer than most equivalences, and still an identification the Suwen does not make)

大 dà — great, large: the graph is a man with his arms and legs flung wide, and everything about it is size. 風 fēng — wind; 《說文》 glosses it from its insect radical, 風動蟲生, the wind moves and the insects quicken, so the graph carries generation as much as motion. Chapter 42 had already given wind its standing phrase, 風者,百病之長也, chief of the hundred diseases. Here the two graphs make a name rather than a degree: 病大風,骨節重,鬚眉墮,名曰大風 — the illness is named from its own sentence, in the same breath as its signs.

In brief

The last and longest case in chapter 55, and the only one the chapter gives a calendar to: heavy joints, beard and eyebrows fallen out, and a treatment that runs in two halves of a hundred days each — needle the flesh until it sweats for a hundred days, then needle to the bone and marrow for another hundred — and stops when the beard and eyebrows grow again. Everything else in the chapter ends on 病已止, the illness done; this one ends on a sign that can only be seen after two hundred days.

Wind is the beginning of the hundred diseases; when the yang qi is pure and still, the flesh and its crevices close and refuse it, and even a great wind or a virulent poison cannot do harm. This too comes of keeping to the sequence of the seasons.

The era of Mounded Height is called widened transformation: its thick virtue is clear and still, it follows growth and fills, the utmost yin is full within, and beings are transformed and brought to fullness; smoke and dust are murky and pent up and appear upon the thick earth; great rain moves in its season, the damp qi comes into use and the governance of dryness is turned aside. Its transformation round, its qi abundant, its governance still, its command complete all round, its movement dampness accumulating and gathering together, its virtue soft, moist, heavy and muddy, its change thunder-shaking, wind-driven rain and collapse, its grain panicled millet and hemp, its domestic animal the ox and the dog, its fruit the jujube and the plum, its colour yellow, black and blue-green, its flavour sweet, salty and sour, its image late summer, its channels the foot greater yin and yang brightness, its viscera the spleen and kidney, its creature the naked and the hairy, its thing flesh and pit, its illness abdominal fullness and limbs that cannot be raised. A great wind comes swiftly and evil injures the spleen.
