鼽

qiú

Blocked nose · qiu

Also rendered: Blocked nose (this site; the plain symptom, since the chapter gives no more than a stopped passage) · Allergic rhinitis (the modern disease Chinese medicine now equates with 鼻鼽; anachronistic for the Suwen)

鼽 qiú — a nose stopped by cold. 《說文》says it in four words: 病寒鼻窒 也, and 釋名 glosses the name from its sound: 鼻塞曰鼽,鼽,久也 — the discharge that has been held too long until it stops the passage. The graph is 鼻 with 九 as its phonetic. Chapter 49 names it in the middle of a list, between the headache and the swollen belly, and explains all three from one thing: bright yang has merged above.

In a year of metal falling short, blazing fire then moves, the qi of growth is put to use, the qi of growth to maturity prevails alone, the many things grow lush, and a parching, scorching qi moves; it answers above to Mars. The people are ill with heaviness and dizziness in the shoulder and back, a stopped nose and sneezing, blood in the stool pouring below; the qi of gathering comes late; it answers above to Venus, and its grain is hard and awned. When revenge comes, cold rain arrives suddenly and hail is scattered, frost and snow kill things, yin counterflow sets in and is repelled, and yang rises counterflow upward: there is pain at the gate of the brain reaching to the crown, and fever; it answers above to Mercury, and the red grain does not form. The people are ill with sores of the mouth and, if it is severe, pain in the heart.

The era of Following Change is called broken harvest: the qi of harvest comes late, the qi of growth is instead raised, growth and transformation join virtue, the governance of fire is proclaimed, and the many kinds flourish. Its qi raised, its use restless and sharp, its movement clanging, retention, dimness and counterflow, its outbreak cough and panting, its viscus the lung, its fruit the plum and the apricot, its kernel husk and network, its grain hemp and wheat, its flavour bitter and acrid, its colour white and vermilion, its domestic animal the fowl and the sheep, its creature the shelled and the feathered, its charge bright shining, blazing and scorching, its sound shang and zhi, its illness sneezing, cough, snivelling and nosebleed; for it follows the transformation of fire.
