癰腫 yōng zhǒng — abscess, and swelling. 癰 is the Suwen's word for a gathering that has begun to suppurate; 腫 is simply swelling. The chapter opens its list of cold transmissions with this pair twice running — once when the kidney shifts cold into the liver, once when the spleen does — and distinguishes them by what comes with them: scant qi in the first, drawn-up sinews in the second. Same swelling, different company. The base text writes 癰, not 痈.

In brief

Abscessous swelling. The first two cold transmissions in chapter 37 both produce it, and are told apart by what accompanies it: scant qi, or drawn-up sinews.
