陰 yin and 陽 yang, the two orders of qi in the body; 交 jiāo, to cross, to meet and tangle. The name is a diagnosis and a verdict in three words. In an ordinary warmth disease sweating cools the body and the vessel grows quiet. Here sweat pours out — which should be essence expelling the evil — and the heat returns at once, and the vessel stays agitated and swift. What goes out is the essence; what stays in is the evil. Yin and yang have changed places, and the exchange itself is the disease.

In brief

The fatal pattern in which sweating, instead of expelling a warmth disease, lets the essence out while the evil stays and the heat returns. Sweat is essence; returning heat is evil. When the two cross — the essence going, the evil remaining — the disease is no longer a fever but an exchange, and the text says plainly that this is death. The chapter names it, then gives the three signs that confirm it.

How it has been translated

Every rendering below is a decision about which reader is being addressed. There is no neutral option.

Wiseman & Fengyin-yang exchangeThey read 交 as an exchange, which keeps the sense that something is being traded — essence out, evil in.
Unschuldthe yin and yang [qi] are intertwinedUnschuld keeps the image of the graph and leaves the mechanism to the commentary.
This siteyin-yang crossingWe keep the graph's own image: two things cross and change places. The chapter itself supplies the meaning — what goes out is essence, what stays is evil — so the English need only name the crossing and let the text explain it.
