經風 简体 经风

jīng fēng

Wind of the channels · jing feng

Also rendered: Wind of the channels (this site; 經 is kept as the channels rather than as the vessels, so that the road and not the contents is what the word carries) · Jing feng (transliteration; used when the sequence 八風 → 經風 → 五藏 is quoted whole)

經 jīng — the channels, the warp of a fabric before it is the warp of the body (《說文》: 經,織也:what runs lengthwise on the loom); 風 fēng — wind. The wind of the channels: what the eight winds of heaven become once they have given off their evil and entered. Suwen 4 says it in one clause — 八風發邪,以爲經風,觸五藏,邪氣發病 — and that clause is the chapter's whole argument in miniature: the wind comes from outside, becomes the wind of the channels, and by that road reaches the five viscera, where it makes disease.

In brief

Wind that has entered and is now carried by the channels. The opening clause of Suwen 4 gives the sequence entire: the eight winds give off evil; becoming the wind of the channels, it touches the five viscera; and the evil qi brings forth disease. 經風 is the middle link of that sequence and the one the chapter invents for itself — it is not a wind of the sky any more, and it is not yet a disease of a viscus. What it names is the road, which is why the same chapter goes on to give every quarter its channel opening: the nape in spring, the chest and flanks in midsummer, the shoulder and back in autumn, the waist and thigh in winter.
