In brief

The lowest of the three burners, separating from the coiled intestine and pouring into the bladder. Grain and water lie together in the stomach, become dregs, and descend into the large intestine; the seeping part goes down by a separate course and filters into the bladder. The chapter’s proof of it is the wine: wine enters after the grain and leaves as urine before it, because its qi is fierce and clear. Its image is a drain — what is carried away and not kept.

Qi Bo replied: The lower burner separates from the coiled intestine and pours into the bladder, seeping into it. Thus grain and water constantly lie together in the stomach, become dregs, and descend together into the large intestine, where the lower burner is formed; the seeping part descends by a separate course and filters into the bladder.

Bo Gao said: Let me state the reason. The stomach is one chi and five cun in girth, five cun across and two chi and six cun long; bent crosswise, it receives three dou and five sheng of water and grain, of which two dou of grain are always retained, and it is full with a dou and five sheng of water. The upper jiao disperses qi and sends out its essence, swift and fierce and slippery and rapid. The lower jiao irrigates the intestines below.

When the qi pathways of yin and yang are blocked, the four seas are stopped, the triple burner does not drain, and the fluids are not transformed, then water and grain move together through the stomach and intestines and divide at the large intestine; what stays in the lower burner cannot seep into the bladder, the lower burner swells, and the water overflowing becomes water distension. Such is the following and opposing of the five divisions of fluid.
