五星
Literal
五 wǔ — five; 星 xīng — a star (《說文》: 星,萬物之精,上為列星). 五星 is the five wandering stars taken together: 歲星、熒惑、鎮星、太白、辰星, one to each of the five circuits, and each answering above when its circuit moves. The chapter names them one by one forty times in its ten tables and gathers them into this one word once, when Huang Di asks whether they answer to the sudden as well as to the constant. They do not: they move by receiving from heaven, and a sudden motion of the qi is not something they answer to.

In brief

The five wandering stars as a single set: Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Venus and Mercury, one to each of the five circuits. The chapter uses them one at a time throughout its ten tables and names them together once, in the question that opens its last movement — whether the planets answer to a sudden change as well as to the settled course of the year. The answer is no, and the reason is that they move by what they receive from heaven: 應常不應卒, they answer to the constant and not to the sudden. What follows is the chapter’s account of how a star is read — by its halting, its size, its colour, and the direction it takes.
